Wallenda's Walk

By now many people heard that karl wallenda is still at it, having successfully crossed niagara falls in just 25 minutes over a 1,500 plus foot distance this past weekend. In the footage I saw of it (and others in the past) I've noticed usually in what is probably the middle of the trek, a plum line of sorts hanging down at what looks to be some 30 feet. Does anybody know what purpose it serves.is there some kind of supplies hanging there he can grab for logistical purposes, like water or some sweat moisture absorbent products, is it integral to the line itself as far as keeping it's integrity and weight distribution, if something was not going right is it a place he could tie off stick ? None of those would seem probable as I would think once you stop moving especially without a balancing stick you would screw yourself.
