The German's biggest mistake was trying to invade Russia. Apart from the fact that Hitler had overall command over every theatre of conflict (including the Russian front) and not taking the advice of his Generals. When retreating, having troops and logistics to fight another day being the best and only option, he ordered them to fight to the death in the face of overwhelming and insurmountable odds. In the face of the worst Russian winter in known history, millions of German soldiers died there, not counting the vast amounts of tanks, big guns and other material that was lost.
