What is SETI doing ?

Our current understanding of life’s origin on Earth suggests that given a suitable environment and sufficient time, life will develop on other planets. Whether evolution will give rise to intelligent, technological civilizations is open to speculation. However, such a civilization could be detected across interstellar distances, and may actually offer our best opportunity for discovering extraterrestrial life in the near future.

If that is their current understanding, why is Seth Shostak against the idea that they are already here. What are they looking for.... if we assume that leaving an interstellar signature is suicidal for an advanced civilization ? Its all about survival isn't it ?

... why are we in such a hurry to render our planet silent by getting rid of analog signals ;)

Hey guys we're here... come and get us LOL

perhaps thats your answer, survival.

the longer they keep looking , the longer the funding keeps rolling in

Check out Stanton Friedman's site. Think he has a good article on SETI still up there.

Silly Effort To Investigate

Considering that there are stars in our local neighborhood that are billions of years older than the sun, it would not be surprising if interstellar travel has been commonplace for billions of years. Several published papers have concluded that our Milky Way galaxy already has been colonized. Furthermore, it must be noted that travel between star systems is more likely to occur the closer the next system is. Zeta 1 and Zeta 2 Reticuli are both sunlike stars that are less than three light-weeks apart. Observers on a planet around one of them could easily observe planets around the other. One would certainly expect interstellar travel to develop earlier there than in our isolated corner of the neighborhood, where the nearest star to us is one hundred times farther away than the Zeta Reticulans are from each other.

It's just common sense, unfortunately you don't get a cosmic perspective if your education system doesn't push science.

If you are referring to Stan, I think it's wouldbe common sense. It isn't actually common unfortunately.

Stan is doing a great job of education. I also like Nova on PBS which also has great shows on cosmology.

If you've noticed, Nova podcasts have been focusing on getting people on to science. Their first step is debunking intelligent design  ... which is a real eye opener on the state of the legitimity of science.

At least there is a possibility that SETI could find something as far fetched as it may be. Ufology has basically come up empty on all fronts. And so has SETI.

My guess is that we will know within a few years if Earth is rare or not. But this is because of the Kepler mission that was just launched. I really think this is the best attempt to find life within our galaxy. That is of course barring a Mars discovery or other solar system planet or moon. But likely, this would be after the completion of Kepler.

By the way, Kepler is unique because it is looking for Earthlike planets in the habitability zone (where water is likely to occur in liquid form). This is unprecedented and if I had to guess, I would say we will find other Earths. This is a much better way of looking for life than SETI IMO. Unless SETI can somehow change their signal detecting to something else that intelligent civilizations might have.

Actually that is reassuring. I view it as a sign that advanced civilizations know how to keep quiet.

Kepler satellite is great, it represents the required effort of humanity to get to the truth. No pain no gain.. and why should everything be served on a silver platter. Instinctively, its obvious that other civilizations have walked on the same road. If we deserve it, we'll get there.

I'm still mad at NOVA for their crap abduction show they did years ago. But, I might check out their podcast. First I've heard of it, thanks.

I found out about a show called The Universe from History Channel the other day. You can watch episodes there. Looked like the series might be good. I haven't watched an entire episode yet though, so not sure.

Q: What is SETI doing?

A: Masturbating

With a limp weewee.

Heard the other day optical SETI grew legs. Or tentacles. Don't know if they are doing away with listening now, or if this is a new branch.

Nah, I'm glad people are listening, or looking, just wish they'd shutup about ufos which they seem to know nothing about. And stop using ufo shows to hype and sell themselves. Many times I've tuned into a show I was led to think was going to be about ufos and/or aliens, only to have the first 5 minutes be about it, then the rest of the show about SETI. How many times have I watched a show on seti, that was hijacked by ufologists? 0. Pity the two fields don't get along and seem in competition. Ideally we should be helping each other. Oh well.
