When I was little, a common saying when things were going awry in a bad way, was it was all going to hell in a hand basket.

so, two different news items from Discovery Channel about our universe going places we hadn't imagined before.

would these constitute the hand basket? :)

http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/09/25/universe-dark-flow.html

about a large section of our Universe being pulled by a large mass of gravity,

and this,

about losing touch with our neighbours and friends.

The expansion of the universe is an unexpected thing certainly. And while I don't know that we have everything worked out exactly, it seems we will ulimately be alone. All alone. Imagine an image from Hubble that has focused in the sky for a long period of time. And instead of counting the numerous tiny spirals and ellipses representing galaxies, we see absolutely nothing. Complete blackness and isolation. Somehow, strangely, I am comforted by the billions of galaxies that we can see.

Time and space are weird things huh??

I agree. and knowing we can see something is comforting, whether or not we will ever be able to visit doesn't matter, it is rather like being on an ocean, and seeing land in the distance, or never seeing any end to the water.

much rather have land in the distance!
