Debt is not all bad imo,
It does help put the brakes on personal consumption.
For example if everybody was given a house to live in for free, they would have huge amounts of disposable income, with which to buy "stuff". And those houses would have to be at least twice the size they are now to store all that lovely stuff

Thats an example of the consumerism and waste lots of disposable income brings.
If everybody did it, the worlds resources would be hit even harder than they already are.
So the average joe is made to spend the lions share of his income on a box to keep his head dry when it rains...... thus putting the brakes on his power to be wasteful by buying lots of Stuff.
The small percentage of Rich people serve a function too though, their lavish lifestyles give us something to aspire to, and something to distract us from the reality we slave all day to pay the mortgage.
