I did my own investigation into the photo in question (in the article).
The photo in question was take using L7 camera has time stamp of 143098049. And the one taken by R1 has a time stamp of 143098049. We have 2 photos with identical time stamp but the photos are different. L and R is one camera and thus should be pointing at the same altitude. But one show different rock line.
On the PANCAM there are lenses or eyes. Left one is L and the right one is R. The number following is the filter used. NASA then used the 2 images to create a composite and better resolution, depth and clarity.
The fact that both have the same time means that one was taken by the left and other by the right as the same time.
