After The Paracast — Available exclusively for Paracast+ subscribers on subscribers on November 10: Former intelligence officer and occult researcher Walter Bosley is back to answer listener questions, talking about the work he did for Air Force Office of Special Investigation and what he can say about his interactions with NSA. He also discusses his book, The Time Travel Guidebook, which suggests a process of using self-hypnosis for time travel. In pop culture, an example of such an attempt was featured in a sci-fi film, “Somewhere in Time,” from 1980, which starred Superman actor Christopher Reeve. Following his military service, Bosley spent six years as a counterterrorism operational consultant. He presently spends his time investigating historical occult mysteries as well as paranormal/UFO phenomena. Bosley is also the publisher of classic and gothic adventure, steampunk, science fiction, noir thrillers and non-fiction, and has appeared on History Channel’s Ancient Aliens and Gaia’s Beyond Belief. He was also featured in the film “Mirage Men,” in which former government agents discussed UFO mythology as a powerful weapon of mass deception and the perfect cover for clandestine technologies and operations. The Others Among Us
By Tim R. Swartz
The controversy about the UFO phenomena has always seemed to take a couple of different tracks: 1. There are no UFOs, they are mistaken natural phenomena, conventional aircraft, or hoaxes. 2. UFOs are top secret, manmade aircraft using conventional or exotic technology. 3. The extraterrestrial hypothesis, UFOs are visitors from other planets.
It's human nature to want definitive, black or white explanations. Things have to be this or that with no gray areas. However, UFOs have always refused to be bookmarked under any specific category.
In our book, "Mimics: The Others Among Us" (Zontar Press, 2023), it's suggested that UFOs are real, not manmade secret technology, but, not all necessarily have to be extraterrestrials from other planets. Håkan Blomqvist, in his excellent article “Ancient Breakaway Civilization — A Source Study,” quotes his friend Tony Brunt who said, “I have no doubt that there are others living in a more advanced state in hidden places on the planet.”
(ufoarchives.blogspot.com/2022/08/ancient-breakaway-civilization-source.html)
Blomqvist writes in several books and blog articles that he has worked to answer the question – who are these human-looking visitors who mingle in our society and possess an advanced technology?
“They are physical like us and seem to be Earth-based in their activities,” Blomqvist says. “If this is the case, where is their hiding place on this planet? Could some specialized and covert intelligence groups have discovered who these people are and begun trying to deal with this delicate issue in their own way? Disclosure of such a fantastic scenario would probably not be regarded as an option by the people who have a need to know.”
This idea is referred to as the cryptoterrestrial hypothesis, and is best known from the work of the late researcher Mac Tonnies and his book The Cryptoterrestrials: A Meditation on Indigenous Humanoids and the Aliens Among Us. Even though Tonnies popularized the hypothesis, it’s not a new idea. Various world mythologies talk about other, hidden races, that live underground or in the oceans. As well, there are some early, esoteric books such as the 1894 book A Dweller on Two Planets, written by Frederick Spencer Oliver, that suggests ancient civilizations such as Atlantis and Lemuria survived by moving underground.
Modern researchers such as Brad Steiger and John Keel wrote extensively about the possibility that UFOs originate from somewhere on Earth and not outer space. There was also Ray Palmer and Richard Shaver who published stories about ancient underground dwellers known as the Dero and Tero which predated the 1947 Kenneth Arnold sightings of UFOs near Mt. Rainier. Palmer was quick to note that Shaver had mentioned a number of times that the Deros used disc-shaped ships; a detail he thought validated the Shaver mystery.
Our recent guest on The Paracast, Walter Bosley, once wrote an article for Fate Magazine using the pen name E.A. Guest. This article, titled “The Other Paradigm” (April 2005), told the story about his father who had worked for a special assignment team in the U.S. Air Force to find and retrieve a crashed UFO. According to Bosley, his father had inspected material taken from several crashes, including human-looking beings, and was briefed at Wright-Patterson about the real nature of the craft and “aliens.”
“A civilization thrives underground, hidden from the surface world,” writes Bosley. “These people are not extraterrestrials. Quite the contrary, they are among the oldest people on this planet…Occasionally, they come and go, emerging in their vehicles, and occasionally they crash. They are human in appearance, so much so that they can move among us with ease with just a little effort.”
Eugene Drake, in his 1950 book Visitors From Space, wrote, “There is an ancient civilization living underground with entrances in Mexico and not such a great distance from Mexico City. They often come to the surface and mingle with the people, but aside from a few mystics, the people of Mexico do not know this, and they would have a difficult time, if they did, in locating the entrances to their underground cities.”
There is also a cryptic statement in Howard Menger’s book From Outer Space to You, when a space woman tells Menger that there are other, not so friendly, extraterrestrials that use people not only from this planet…but “also other people of your planet – people you don’t know about. People who live unobserved and undiscovered as yet. It is a kind of ‘underground’ in your popular terminology.”
In 2023, Harvard University’s Human Flourishing program released a speculative paper titled The Cryptoterrestrial Hypothesis: A Case for Scientific Openness to a Concealed Earthly Explanation for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, written by Tim Lomas, Brendan Case and Michael Paul Masters. This paper proposes a unique perspective on UFOs and related phenomena that are often attributed to extraterrestrial origins.
The Cryptoterrestrial Hypothesis explores the idea that certain UFOs could have an earthly origin — hypothetically involving a hidden terrestrial species that exists alongside humanity, yet remains largely undetected. By examining potential evolutionary and cultural explanations, the researchers suggest an approach to UFO studies that moves beyond strictly extraterrestrial hypotheses.
There are some ways in which this hypothesis could explain certain aspects of the UFO phenomenon:
Stealth and Evasion Tactics
Cryptoterrestrials could have evolved to avoid detection by humans, explaining why sightings are often brief and why no concrete evidence of such beings has been captured. The sporadic nature of UFO sightings and the evasive maneuvers often observed could be deliberate tactics, refined over time, to remain hidden from the larger human population.
Advanced Earth-Based Technology
If an advanced species had developed on Earth separately, they might possess technologies that appear extraordinary to us yet are fundamentally Earth-based. This could explain sightings of craft that perform rapid accelerations, sharp turns, or even seemingly "impossible" maneuvers in our atmosphere — feats that may utilize undiscovered principles of physics or unique adaptations to Earth's environment.
Underwater or Underground Habitats
Given that a large portion of Earth's oceans and subterranean areas remain unexplored, cryptoterrestrials might inhabit remote environments such as deep-sea regions or cavern networks. This could explain the prevalence of UFO sightings near bodies of water and the so-called "USOs" (Unidentified Submersible Objects).
Human Interaction and Influence in Ancient Lore
Cryptoterrestrials could have had occasional interactions with humans throughout history, potentially influencing a number of myths and folklore. Stories of "hidden" or "fairy" folk, along with other cryptic beings in various cultures, might reflect occasional encounters with these entities. This hypothesis suggests that myths of beings from "hidden realms" like elves, faeries, or jinn could be rooted in ancient experiences with cryptoterrestrials.
Cryptoterrestrials may also actively study or monitor humanity from a distance, leading to sightings near population centers, military installations, or technological hubs. The hypothesis posits that they might avoid direct interaction to maintain their secrecy, intervening subtly or observing without openly engaging. This could explain patterns in UFO sightings that suggest intentional, yet cautious, observation.
The three authors call for scientific openness to a range of possibilities, suggesting that unknown aspects of our own planet could account for some anomalous sightings. The paper emphasizes a multidisciplinary framework involving biology, anthropology, and environmental science, aiming to reduce bias and broaden scientific inquiry into UFOs.
The cryptoterrestrial hypothesis provides a different perspective that doesn’t require otherworldly explanations but instead proposes that the answers to some UFO mysteries could be found right here on Earth.
Our attitude to such controversial data should be neither belief nor disbelief, but keeping an open mind and using the information as an alternate working hypothesis. Only further research can determine what is real and what is myth with this enigma.
