aah! I see. So what are you actually seeing?
Unfortunately I have to front load and bore you with an explanation, also you will find assumptions abound here simply because I’ m not very vested in this subject, I am curious to a degree, but never felt strongly about pursuing any observations as I haven’t the time
I hike a lot on the weekends and during the weekdays I’ll eat outside and many evenings I’ll take 1- 1 1/2 hour walks. I have always had this weird little fetish whenever I hear a high altitude flight especially in the evenings I will make an effort to see if I can spot it and how long it takes for me to do so, I guess I always liked to test my eyes or perception or something, to see if I could pick out this tiny fast moving object in the sky. In an average evening I will spot some 10-12 flights, some military some seemingly commercial ( you can usually tell from the speed and/or the ability to make out any navigational lights on the side) all flying on roughly a north-south pattern. A east-west pattern is all but nonexistent, the only time you see planes flying east from here is planes that took off from lax, turned around over the ocean and headed back east but even then there is no danger of confusing these with any of the aforementioned high altitude flights.
However starting in the fall and continuing into late spring the east west flights increase dramatically, in fact I’ll see about the same number of east-west flights (and reverse) as I do north-south (and reverse) in any given period. These flights seem to be military in nature again telling from the speed and that would probably be a logical assumption as there are probably few (if any) commercial flights overflying the us mainland at this point because in all likelihood such planes would stop on the west coast first. In other words I don’t think there are many (if any) international flights that fly OVER L.A. They would land in L.A. before continuing on. I was always struck by why there would be a seasonal increase in e-w/w-e flights
This increase in flight activity coincides with prime contrail season, and this in itself isn’t particularly noteworthy as it is during this time of year that the air is cooler and has more moisture from the changing weather pattern. During the summer its warm and dry. At any rate starting in the autumn I will see a lot of horizon to horizon contrails from jets that aren’t particularly high in fact I often see multiple jets (3, even 4) in my same field of view whereas this phenomena is again for as far as I can tell nonexistent during much of the year. Granted it could be because of the lack of contrails their existence could be hidden during this time but I would still hear them. During the winter at night I’ll hear two or three jets at a time from various directions at a time looking for all the world like two or three farmers out plowing their fields.
Another thing that strikes me is these cloud blooms that come out of nowhere. Again without really looking into this phenomena I have to wonder how these contrails (which can be numerous) could bloom and spread out until the point where the sun is now hidden from view from what was a couple of hours ago a clear blue sky. I literally will lie on my back at a park goggs and watch this take place before my very eyes and my view is this, even if there is nothing nefarious going on, it still bears noting that there has to be kind of impact on us over time, we have so much air traffic over southern california ( and elsewhere) that it effects the amount of sunlight reaching us, no wonder there is talk of geo-engineering, I am not so sure on this myself but I guess it would fit right in with man-made climate change…intentional or not… I mean it seems like one would have to believe in neither or both I laugh in jest at times when the weather report for the day will report a clear winter day and by 3 o clock it will be hazy and overcast from the overhead traffic . It just doesn’t seem normal and when you think about it would seem to bolster any argument about mans impact on the environment, again intentional or not.
The thing is, as I noted above the only time I see this is during our cooler season, I ASSUME it’s weather related, again because of the cooler air, but if the horizon-to-horizon contrails are the result of HIGHER altitude flights then I would think I would see this phenomena year round, because once you would get at that height, I don’t think local weather would be an issue, the air at that altitude would still be cold and filled with moisture (would it not,?) also even during the winter we still have dry periods and lower level flights (where one could almost see the markings on the plane) still cause these horizon spanning contrails
There is a blog at
socalskywatch that documents this activity., and here’s a funny thing also, if you go to that site right now you’ll see pictures of what he purports to be chemtrail activity in july this year. Now this summer we did have (maybe hasn’t finished) a strange summer in that it was quite humid, tropical like, with cloud structure attributes you’d see in Miami. This is not atypical for us for a brief period every year in the summer we get the tail end of the “monsoons” where tropical air from mexico comes our way, probably pushed here from hurricanes and is what is usually responsible for the forest fires that hit the desert sw, at any rate we did have an extended period of that this year and while I wouldn’t push that as proof of anything one way or another, I did note that lack of any contrails in this dense moisture laden air even from jets flying high above, although the blogs author did notice these down south further in the san diego area whose weather doesn’t really differ all that much from us. What makes the san diego county areas so special that there was contrail formation and not the los angeles area?
Now let me say right here, I wasn’t there I did not see these formations develop I cannot testify as to their origin, there are cloud formations that do very much look like an puffed out contrail, (perhaps they are even expanded contrails formed elsewhere that are moving) but I can see those coming, what I was specifically mentioning earlier, which I’m sure you understood, is my eyewitnessing the growth of these clouds, before my very eyes in a brief period
Maybe these things would fit into a logical and mundane explanation, as I mentioned earlier I mostly have just noted conditions and kept notes but haven’t really looked into it. There now aren’t you sorry you asked ?, I know I am because that was a hell of a lot of typing for me
