A Whole Branch of Science Turns Out To Be Fake!

I think there is something to this article but not for the reasons stated . A lot of classic experiments in psychology are being tested for reproducibility.
Psychologists strike a blow for reproducibility

Thirty-six labs collaborate to check 13 earlier findings.

From : Psychologists strike a blow for reproducibility : Nature News & Comment

Also the Center for Open Science is discrediting a lot of experiments because the sample sizes are too small. I wouldn't surprised if there are changes to DSM eventually. It would also be interesting to what hand the drug companies have in this.

My sister in law went Bat Shit Crazy
I could fill a dozen pages of details, but i'll just give the highlights

Despite living in Australia she became convinced the CIA was out to get her. I recall a visit to her home and the place was chock a block full of glass jars with water she had collected from neighbourhood faucets. She did this because she truly believed the CIA had put radioactive isotopes in her water supply.
She would take us into the toilet, turn out the lights and say "see its glowing".

It wasnt of course.

She wrote hundreds of BSC letters to politicians and other authoritys like the pope and the queen

Medication helped her, though she had to be held down and injected by community nurses on a regular basis.

But it did help her, she was able to function normally once she was on meds

I once asked my doctor to prescribe me viagra and prozac......

He wanted to know why i wanted such an odd combination

I said that way if i dont get a......i wont give a..... Kaboom boom tish

Thank you, thank you i'll be playing here all week

But i have to admit as soon as i saw the title of the article my first thought was $cientology

That the author shows up on one of their lists didnt surprise me

I am copying this post over from the Greg Bishop thread because it belongs here.

Per Chris in reference to me,

" Talk about "a brick wall!" My thoughts as posted DID NOT "bash all of psychiatry," but rather it pointed out the unholy relationship and the collusion that exists between big pharma and the medical establishment. You obviously didn't read my posts carefully. Therefore, since you have your mind made up that I am an ignorant "ranter," I will not address this issue w/ you further and we don't ban people for their opinions. I'm sorry if you feel I'm insensitive and that made you "shaky and angry," and that you felt I thought your views were "irrelevent," (which is NOT the case—everyone is entitled to their opinion). That said, you can feel all warm and cozy and continue w/ this thread all you want—it's all yours."

Chris, The name of the thread is

A Whole Branch of Science Turns Out To Be Fake!

When the thread was opened, you presented a 2 part ranting article by Ron Rappoport (spelling is probably wrong), a close conspiracy obsessed pal of Jeff Rense and a Scientologist, claiming that psychiatry was total bunk.

But first, your initial sentence was:

"[Psychiatry is nothing more than the deaf leading the blind, categorizing 297 types of mental disease so that the drug companies can target their marketing for new drugs. Disgusting and disturbing eye-opening piece! —chris]"

Yes, the article did claim that psychiatrists were essentially whores for the Pharmaceutical industry. It is true that modern psychiatry has taken advantage of many drugs that do remove anxiety and lessen depression. Unlike what he said, no one turns into a mindless zombie. Anyone who feels that way is over medicated and should contact their doctor immediately.

The point of the article was to totally denounce psychiatry, claiming it to be a illegitimate field. I believe this fine gentleman also felt the same way about psychology and any therapy for the mind. One person posted his findings about the author and Scientology, and how basic Scientology dogma proclaims that MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO psychiatrists were the root cause of all evil in the world. Much projection from the demented mind of L. Ron Hubbard ya think?

After my rebuttal of this stance (by sharing my own experience with the literally life saving power of psychiatry when used by a professional of 25 years), you narrowed your complaints down to reflect the above post.

Nonetheless, the original intent of the thread was to share an article by a man of dubious integrity that totally denounced the entire field of psychiatry.

You made up the title for the thread, which again stated that you were going to reveal to us a totally FAKE profession. So how can you come here after-the-fact and proclaim that I was wrong and did not read the posts!

I think a better man may have recanted any faith in the article that YOU posted that totally destroyed the field of science known as psychiatry. . This was not done.

I realize it is hard to say you are wrong at times. So just blame the person who pointed it out. That is my last comment on this, although I would not be surprised if there will be another comment from Chris to restate how RIGHT he was and how WRONG I was. This entire thread was a disgrace to the forum.

Here again is the title. How else do you interpret this, as formulated by Chris?

A Whole Branch of Science Turns Out To Be Fake!

I often thought the reasons why the $cientologists had a stick up their ass about psychiatry was because it eats into their potential profit margins, in other words for a s***load of money the boys and girls on Fountain Ave. can help you go clear and achieve the same results. Not for nothing do they have a large compound on Hollywood Boulevard probably to catch tourists eyes. I wonder if they ever approach the mentally ill homeless that abound there, probably not.

They also have a musuem of psychiatry on sunset blvd...across the street from eckanar no less....dedicated to the "horrors of psychiatry" but operated under another named organization, it's so blantatly obvious it's laughable.

You know how to get a scientologist to lose interest? Show him/her your empty pockets.

For what its worth i agree with you in regards to the pharma industrys pushing their products. thats like putting the fox in charge of the hen house

BTSG is right, I posted without my usual caveats, disclaimers and dispassionate objectivisim. So, that said, here ... I'm reminding myself:

Mental illness is as real as measles, and as complex as the human mind itself.

A good hearted but troubled friend of mine is certifiably paranoid schizophrenic, complete with having to carry the horrible burden of hearing troublesome voices. The fact that he is perfectly aware of and admits his disorder makes things seem all the stranger. He once emphasized how much he hates being aurally tormented and is careful not to skip his anti-psychotic meds. "So--the medications make the voices go away?" I asked. "No" he replied. But the medications result in much less hostile voices ! "

As much as this sounds like a lame joke, the poor man's reality is living with "others in his head" that, to him, sound utterly real and from which there is no escape. The brain, like any other organ of the body, is prone to malfunction.

DO AWAY WITH ALL PUBLIC DRUG ADVERTISING and then clean up the influence of big pharma on our politicians and the medical industry!

I must agree with Chris on this one. I don't see public advertisement of prescription meds as of value to anyone but pharmaceutical companies. I once had the misfortune of sitting next to a table full of pharmacy reps at a coffee shop. You all know the type. These are the sales reps on wheels chosen for their genetic good looks and presumed ability to convince your doctor that whatever they have is preferable to "brand X" in your body. Their approach and planning was almost Machevellian, complete with a discussion of specific doctors presumed interests, psychological weak spots, etc. I found it frankly disgusting.

but at the same time if I were in a position of needing pharmaceuticals I don't think I would want to be at the whims of my doctor. the reality could be that there could be a better drug for you than what your doctor might be prescribing and he or she may not even be aware of it or the doctor themselves could be in the pocket of a pharmaceutical company of a drug that isn't right for you. seeing it in a magazine would probably give me the incentive to at least inquire about it.

I suppose there is a certain subset of people that shouldn't be exposed to oversaturation of ads because of dependency issues and they might be dead set on grabbing at anything that appears on their radar but you find that same subset in other just about every other sector that carries a risk of dependency and addiction.

I guess I would try to hook up with a doctor that has a relationship with a compounding pharmacy

Chris, I appreciate your comments above (which I "liked"). The point we all should bear in mind is that in America in 2015 I believe it would be hard to find ANY FIELD OF ENDEAVOR that is not in some way corrupt, or at a minimum does not contain individual practitioners who are lazy, uncaring, self-seeking, etc. Perhaps this is just the way of the world. That is why it is good to do some research before engaging just about anyone to help you. I did a lot of research, for example, before going to my psychiatrist. Nowadays, the internet has a lot of rating agencies for just about anything. I was able to read many testimonials by people who had worked with this psychiatrists. I was able to read his history, and the views of his nationwide peers. Hell, you can do this before you hire a plumber! See if he/she is licensed by the state, if their employees are insured, testimonies from others, etc.

I had a GP who was so bad I called him THE REPTILE. He was cold and cruel, and never took the time to really ask any questions. Then another doctor joined that particular clinic in Anthem, AZ. This new doctor was brilliant, took the time to empathize and seek out a true diagnosis. When this new doctor consequently moved to a Scottsdale office, 250 patients from Anthem followed him. So instead of a 10 minute drive to see THE REPTILE, these people were willing to drive 45 minutes just to see this new doctor. This just goes to show perhaps how RARE(?) and how appreciated an excellent GP is. People truly have to do some research and never presume that all doctors are ethical and even care about your welfare at all. THE REPTILE, for example, was heard referring to patients in the waiting room as "Cattle". That didn't go over too well.
