anti troll suggestions

Free episodes:

I am away for periods of time here lately. But I don't think the trolling problem is severe enough to warrant extensive moderation. Heavily moderated forums have a way of stifling free exchange of ideas--both ugly and good. Most trolls are immature mentalities out for a kind of instant gratification. They usually (usually) move on to other hunting grounds if repeatedly banned or just plain ignored.

I just like reading posts from people with an open mind. Take an episode and discuss it without leaning all the way to one extreme of the spectrum. What I've found lately is a few skeptics on the forum who seem to ride the fine line between discussion and trolling. They have a skeptical view and I believe (if given enough space) would write a book on their viewpoint. That's why I love the ignore feature.

What's wrong with being skeptical? Keep in mind that a few long time members are quite skeptical, including a few of the moderators (myself included).

I see no need to take any action. In fact, in terms of people such as 'Sesame schmuck' I say let them stay on as long as there is nothing against normal forum rules. Reason I want them left alone is the slim chance we may find out who was doing it (sesame). For a psychological profile-type reason I'd love to know more about a person who signs up for forums just to anonymously post messages that are negative comments or argumentative.
I mean someone either has WAY too much time on their hands, or a SERIOUS grudge in their head cos it is just not normal to behave in that way. It has to be someone with a personal issue against the show to be so persistent.

I expect Gene has a few likely suspects but of course without proof you cannot go around naming and shaming unless you have your facts right, facts checked, and facts checked again!

I say 'Bring it on' mr/ms Sesame schmuck, for you are a sad loser with no friends! It must be like having a much older brother who is having a party with friends and as the younger brother you can only watch from the sidelines, desperate to be accepted and in the 'in' crowd etc. Sesame is that younger brother who watches others having fun and feels compelled to mock that fun they are not part of. It is genuinely a real sad case who spends time trying to start arguments with people on an online forum! We have a word here for people like that and I imagine most English-speaking countries have the same term: 'Saddo'

Here is the math: SesameSchtick + small willy - number of real friends + pent up anger=Saddo

I hear you man... the longer I have been interested in the paranormal the more skeptical I have become.

I expect that is normal.

I find great value in taking into account opposing voices no matter which side of the fence one is on. in fact the skeptical leaning voices keep me somewhat grounded. But at least we do find common ground when it comes to troll disposal and eradication

Maybe overly skeptical is a better phrase. The kind of skepticism that borders on arrogance. I've seen one or two that fit that description.

Maybe even to the point of talking down to others ? Here ? That is a fair point, but I think I've seen the same behavior in some of the believers as well, as in "if you don't see what I see, than I feel sorry for you" I think I may have been guilty if that early on.

No one can rightly divide the truth without healthy and active skepticism. Paranormal studies are if anything, a theater of the absurd that cannot be safely navigated without it. To say, "I doubt it until I see evidence that convinces me otherwise." is the basis for any real knowledge humanity now possesses. Also, it isn't arrogance to say, "I've looked at the evidence and I remain unconvinced." It's just honesty.

The person who is spoofing and creating the puppets cannot mount a reasonable argument to present or defend their views, that is why they are stooping to the nonsense that they are. This isn't about skepticism. It is about being able to handle yourself in something other than the "Is so! Is not!" format.

with the last round of trolling I am bringing this topic back to see if some thing that can be done to curb trolls. post your ideas here...

Are you talking about the guy who posted in the Meier thread? I wouldn't classify him as a troll, he did make some personal attacks but it wasn't anything horrible or rule breaking imo, other than that he's just a guy who has a different opinion than most of us when it comes to that particular case. You can't classify someone as a troll simply because they don't agree with you. The last guy we had here, the one that this thread was made about, was more along the lines of troll material, though he wasn't very good at it.

I don't think a skeptic is a troll per se. If they came on just to say bigfoot are alien butt-babies then that's a troll. Otherwise just an opinionated person and if they make personal attacks they're just an opinionated person who also happens to be a prick. That said I haven't seen the post in question on the Meier topic.
