The HP and Dell gear is build in the same factories run by the same Asian conglomerates.

At least Apple speaks out about the conditions and it has been demonstrated they are doing things to improve the situation.

Tim Cook seems to be one of the few good guys at the top of a major corporation - he's doing quite a bit to makes things better for everyone:

Tim Cook Soundly Rejects Politics of the NCPPR, Suggests Group Sell Apple's Stock - The Mac Observer

That's just one example. IF you're concerned about how workers in China are treated, you should actually consider only buying from Apple - they are by far the best, although definitely not perfect. Chris is currently using one of my old iMacs that will be six years old by December. It still runs great, and can deliver credible performance with all the newest versions of OS X, including the forthcoming El Capitan. My notebook is a MacBook Pro, circa 2010, and I see no reason to consider replacing it for at least a few more years. Well, unless I get a windfall, of course.

The iMac I'm typing this on just turned 7 years old. I will still be able to update to the next OS in the fall, although I am considering finally upgrading it this year because I want a retina screen.
