Okay... So today I pick up a box of poptarts at Sam's Club.

I have an unfinished box of them from like a month or so ago.

Same kind of poptarts, Brown Sugar and Cinnamon, and guess what?

The new ones are SMALLER, and cost the same price.

I am truly pissed.

So what else is new? Consumer Reports has been documenting scams of this sort for years, with lots of products.

I have heard more than once that John Kellogg tried to curb the masturbation sensation by giving the world corn flakes. Now THIS! What a cruel twist. Somebody should have wacked him, pun intended. (I am with you on the brown sugar and cinnamon, good eat’n)

Are these poptarts from Zeta Reticuli? I mean, what's the connection to the Paracast?

Just kidding! :P
I used to loooooove poptarts when I was a kid. I never liked the frosted ones though.

The same thing made news here a few years ago
chocolate bars got the treatment as i recall 5 grams here 3 grams there.
the marketing maths being that as the price of raw ingredients goes up , so must the cost of the POS product in question, but if the market wont stand a price rise, then the product must shrink.

The box says they're the same, but they aren't.

Total lies and fabrication on the part. Poptarts are my only vice these days as I work out now and my only real caloric freebie is Poptarts.

Don't get me started...

Have you also noticed over the years that the width of the crust has increased so you are getting less filling and frosting than you used to?

Now you've got about a 1/2" of crust all around this tiny island of filling.

This reminds me of my childhood in Zimbabwe. We used to eat pieces of camel shit for breakfast. Then the drought came and we had no water to mix with it. Well, with the lack of water there came no dung beetles to burrow into the shit. The dung beetles were my only source of protein. That's when I almost died of starvation, but luckily I found a hidden water hole filled with decaying fish carcasses. Yum.

"We used to live in a shoebox in the midle of the road!"
"Cardboard box?"
"Yeah."
"You were lucky. We used to live in a paper bag in a septic tank."

etc, etc...

Wow... It's too bad that your people never bothered to learn how to grow food or domesticate animals, or develop preservation or refrigeration methods.

I gotta tell you I feel pretty special that my ancestors came from a cold climate culture instead of relying on the handouts or camel crap donated by other people and other countries.

I have absolutely no respect for people who cannot raise themselves up even if they're having their hands held, fed, clothed, and educated by the outside world.

There is no excuse for there to be starving children anywhere. NONE.

However, if you're simply saying that Poptarts are the western equivalent to Camel Shit, then you'd probably be right. The only thing lower are ramen noodles, and anything on McDonald's Menu.

Only someone who is completely ignorant of the living conditions in those African countries would say that. You have no idea what the hell you're talking about. I do, however, since I worked in Peace Corps for two years over there.

What I find most interesting is how instead of leaving people to develop on their own, in their own ways, we have people who constantly meddle instead of allowing indigenous people to continue on their own.

They were doing just fine before the missionaries, and the Peace Corps, they would be just fine without them. In fact they might even thrive.

Just because you're over there doing whatever, doesn't mean you're really helping someone out. I've noticed a pattern of force when it comes to the problems in that country. The more money we throw at the problems, the more of it gets spent by the various warlords, and government officials who don't use it wisely to feed and help their own people.

Which is why the peace corps, and various missionary groups are over there, making up for the money and resources that were stolen and wasted by the powers that be.

But you'll tell me I'm ignorant because I'm not there helping out.

If this was a world of nice people and the powerful did not exploit the weak then I would agree with you.

No, I didn't say you're ignorant because you're not over there helping. You're ignorant because of your comments about how there's no excuse for children to starve and how they should solve their problems on their own.

I disagree about leaving those people on their own and expecting them to thrive. Most of the people over there don't even know how HIV is spread. That's why so many of them (up to 50% in some places) have it. The only thing that will change that is Western intervention. They need to be educated about these things, in addition to others. This is not the same thing as suggesting that we should Westernize their culture.

All I was doing over there was digging trenches throughout Kenya so that some villages could get clean water instead of the parasitic sewage they were used to drinking.

first purchase i made on my Amex card was a phone call to care australia and a monthly donation of 30 bucks. one dollar a day.
i get a tax receipt once a year for 300 and some bucks.
its less than i spend of coffee a day and isnt much in the small or large scheme of things.

i do so only because its logical, if every credit card in existance operated on the same principle there would be no starving ppl anywhere

to my mind its imperative the whole planet be able to read and use the internet asap

I think this falls into the same category as releasing animals into the wild when they don't have the basic survival skills. If we leave people in these situations to fend for themselves, we are effectively killing them.

My sister is currently working for a conservation group in South Asia that not only helps preserve wilderness and it's inhabitants but teaches the local community how to farm efficiently without destroying their environment. Many people are being taught to farm and that's a form of relief. In my opinion, relief for these people is a necessity.

It's easy to throw a few coins into a vending machine and make comments of developing nations whilst reaching for your Pepsi.

Tommy Allison does make a point though. "Just because you're over there doing whatever, doesn't mean you're really helping someone out. I've noticed a pattern of force when it comes to the problems in that country. The more money we throw at the problems, the more of it gets spent by the various warlords, and government officials who don't use it wisely to feed and help their own people." This is a common problem. A lot of the funds that are supposed to go to the people in need is slowly filtered through the process. In many cases, this is obvious fraud. So many processes and hands in people's pockets. By the time the money gets to it's final destination, organisational costs have taken their toll. My sister pointed this out also. She also made a great point about these organisations that claim to help but also take a massive bite out of the funds.

It's unfortunate that the governments and organisations take the money and allocate funds to other areas instead of where it's actually supposed to go.

The solution is education. Slowly replace the relief process with a more practical long term solution. Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day...teach him how to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime.

Which makes you ask the question, how is it everyone else's ancestors figured out all their problems, and why these people cannot? We've been sending missionaries, the red cross, and various other agencies like the peace corps for the last 300 years.

They call it Natural Selection for a reason. It's not just for animals, but for people as well. We have it here in the modern world too, except that instead of the survival of the fittest, we have the survival of the economically fittest, or socially fittest.

I don't seem to recall why it is that we have a duty to help people who are willing accompli in their dependence. Education will help them sure, but in the end, they will continue to be a drain on the rest of the world until the people that govern them are destroyed. For over 300 years the modern world has been helping the people of Africa out, and look what has happened?

I have no duty to funnel money to people who will take it for themselves, and leave the most impoverished to starve. Money is not the solution. Material resources are not the solution. Leaving them to fix their problems, and walking away is.

Then again, the whole country has problems and that is largely in part to those wealthy bastards who have been stripmining the wealth of that continent. If left alone Africa could probably rebound without anyone's help.
