I'm going to be off the board for two hours (or more) beginning in 25 minutes (watching the livestream of the presentation concerning the 'Roswell Slides' in Mexico City), so if I don't respond here for awhile it's not because I'm not interested.

@Pharoah

I liked the part about the challenge ... but this part:

But that very possibility seems absurdly remote to me.

Boo! Boo I say ... self-fulfilling prophecy, etc. You need to fix that quick with some visualization or hypnosis or NLP or tapping or whatever. Psycho-cybernetics, dude ...

On a very practical level, look at where you are trying to publish - PoM and academic philosophy journals ... think outside the box, baby -

@Constance the four pdfs are this conversation's threads (on this forum) from beginning to now.
@smcder not sure what your main point is in your last thread—if there is one.

If there is one ... ?

It's a post, not a thread. remember that

When I lived in Germany, I wanted to take some of my friends back to the little town where I lived for the first month of my stay. I was really excited, because the family lived in a tierisch geil house - with three stories, no four stories and they had a big pile of Neil Diamond records. The mom's name was Renate. Remember that. And so we all got on the train - the old joke is that German trains run on time ... and the sad reality is they do.

So we get there and we walk and walk ... and I'm sure I know my way around and I do. When we arrive we are right there in front of the house. And between us is a river or large creek. We can't cross it, that's the point. So the guys give me hell because I didn't know there was a river and it was no use to point out to them that I took them straight there because we had to walk a long way around to get back to the town. And I've used that technique a lot since.

I can't remember if we ever meet my family or not. But that wasn't the point, do you see that now? Seems like the kid of that family was named Oliver and that he was a smart - ass. If he wasn't named Oliver and wasn't a smart ass then the big guy who pushed me and I pushed back when I first got to Germany - was. It was my way of helping him, as far as I know he stopped bullying people. Tall, indeed. Tall, but not stout.

So anyway I think we got a beer and nearly missed the last train out - which ran on time.

And that's the main point, surely you see that??

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask ... which "last thread" are you referring to?

Also, you mean to say you copied all of the threads onto a PDF? Did you check with Gene or Chris on this? And all the participants?

I don't see why that would be necessary, Steve.

The livestream from Mexico City is delayed.

While I'm here I might as well say that I sense that you two are locking horns lately, being confrontational. I wish you'd stop it.

I don't know if it would be or not ... if I remember that came up when we talked about archiving the material before, I think someone brought up the question of who actually owns the material on the forum. Came up in 1 or 2 I think, I'll see if I can find it.

As to being confrontational, I don't read it that way - I think of it a little like a sparring match, very stimulating, and I'm going off @Pharoah's response:

@smcder... so much going on in these posts... glad you are having fun
Picky is good. Taking me to task is good. Being a bastard even better (you know where you are with one of them).
..
Let me know if I have missed anything out in my response. Don't apologise (if that was one) for being pedantic etc. I find the criticisms and questioning helpful. You can be much more brutal if you feel the urge.

The point's not to be brutal of course! The point is to try and be constructively critical, I went through all of that about the modified socratic method in law school and my concern about how it would be perceived and that was Pharoah's response. I learned a lot in law school and it is a adverserial system that we learn there ... but the truth is supposed to come out of it. Now there are other approaches - but I figure the referee of these journals will be much more smarter and better educated as to what gets in the journal, so I was trying to give a little bit of stiffness ahead of time - the marketplace of ideas can be brutal. I was also trying to be encouraging in my last post as to Pharoah's last statement re: desparing of being published.

I don't think he has any particular deficiencies ... as to the nature of the post, well, I put a whole lot in there to see what he might find, so I was disappointed when he only asked if I had a main point ...

My wife's aunt is not doing well - we are headed to the H to visit, so I will be offline tonight.

I guess H means hospital; I hope things are not too difficult for your wife's aunt and indeed for all of you involved with her. Take care.

I did bring up the idea of archiving the thread back in part 1 - someone had brought up the idea of indexing it too ... I'll search on those key words as I remember now there was discussion around that. There were several participants in part one & two and I don't know what if any thing is required ... @Pharoah offered copies and the whole thing can be searched without a log in from any search engine ... but I do know some posters posts have been removed ? at their request so I'm not sure again what if anything holds legally as to keeping / offering copies...

I don't think the Paracast owns what posters write in the forums. I also don't think there are legal grounds for posters on open forums to object to anyone saving their posts or even quoting them in other internet forums. To save and share a whole thread privately, not publishing it in another location on the internet, would, as I understand it, not fall under intellectual property law.

good deal ... i couldnt find any more about it ... didnt want to make any assumptions

got a copy of tULoB and started reading today ... there is an audiobook and the movie available on YouTube (which probably does fall under intellectual property law)

I asked Gene how to do it, so I assumed it was ok to do it.
Anyway the archive is on these 4 pdfs. I will leave this post online for a couple of days and then delete it... that should give @Constance and @smcder time enough to download them. They are very useful for searching key words and being pdfs they retain their hyperlinks.

Thanks Pharoah. That's a good way to proceed. Btw, how do you feel about our moving on to read and discuss the text of Kundera's novel?

@Constance:
Kundera's novel: I can't contribute much to that. I am focused on MH et al. for a bit. The novel, IMO, does not offer much in the way of insight. It is a good read and left me puzzling over things a bit.
post 182: "Hmm, let me mull that over"
Was the mulling over:
Pharoah: "What initial experience (in utero perhaps) could have presented my Being as that particular Being in the world? or what combination of chemicals makes my Being rather than another? or why should a physical structure or process be the defining feature of My spatiotemporal Being? yes they might rxplain Beings as Being-in-the-world... but not my particular one "?
If so...

@smcder:
Several themes have come up recently:
Purpose - the individual's and mankind's
Job (have tried to read this... harder the MH! but wiki helped me out)
Eternal recurrence (did N know at the time about the expanding/collapsing universe or of multiverses etc.?)
Morality... ethics (huge area. HCT does impact on ethics and aesthetics. Do you want to open this tin?)
Being (in various guises - I am interested in @Constance's mulling over (see above))
transcendence (#5 HCT, moral transcendence, new purpose...)

I am not sure where we are at with all of this. I do appreciate that you (smcder) have been unsatisfied with my stance on some of these issues of late. I would like to focus in on things... that is more helpful IMO.

I have got a bit confused by where we are going with the questions. For example, the 'moral realist' thing: does it really matter whether I am one or not?

no

I've started the book ... I'll put the movie on order with Netflix. We could look at Hiroshima Mon Amour and Bigger Than Life or others, too ... or philosophical novels, Thomas Mann or I'm sure there's lots of possibilities ... Moby Dick, Camus, Sartre ... Hesse ... Also Sprach Zarathustra ... Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (PK Dick @Constance you've mentioned wanting to read this one) ... Proust ...

or we could write our own, taking turns chapter by chapter
