Giants, the men of renown

Free episodes:

Who is orchestrating this cover-up? ...human giants ..would put a spanner in the works of many religous beliefs and accepted histories.

Therein lies the conspiracy. You must consider what the world was like in post-Civil War America. Consider the "problems" ancient giants created for the profit-seeking oligarchs of that time:

* Politics. Mormons in the West were a genuine threat to the U.S. Government. They wanted to secede. (They believe in ancient giants.)

* Racism. The moral right of white people to genocide Native Americans required that Indians be a savage race with no history. British eugenics and racial purity ideals were just beginning to gain traction.

* Religion. Darwinism and Scientific Socialism were not established like they are today. Those theories require that modern men be smarter and more advanced than those existing before. The Enlightenment battle to replace the religion of the Church with the religion of State had yet to be won.

In 1879 Congress created the Bureau of Ethnology, and appointed the head of the Smithsonian, Major John Powell, to run it. Powell specifically stated that the official policy of The Smithsonian was to suppress any data which indicated native Americans had ever enjoyed contact with overseas peoples in ancient times (Vikings, Egyptians, Africans, etc.).

Thank you, Charlie. Excellent points. For myself, I'm looking forward to the day when someone like Klaus Dona comes into possession of an intact nine or ten-foot giant skeleton and puts it on display.

There seems to be a wide disagreement about whether giants lived in North America before the Native American tribes we're all familiar with. This deep controversy also seems to be ready-made for a future Paracast episode. I would urge Gene to give UFOs and Bigfoot a slight rest and bring on one of the authors who've pursued serious research into the subject. There are a handful, but I can't think of anyone better than Richard Dewhurst. In his recent book, Dewhurst does a excellent job of debunking the notion that all the old newspaper accounts were exaggerated pulp fiction, designed to sell papers. In reality, the sheer number of published accounts--complete with detailed descriptions, names, dates and places--argues confidently that the presence of giant skeletons in North American burial mounds was more than myth. Native American wisdom tradition will also tell you much about the giants . . . if you only take the time to listen.
