What i dont understand is that in most situations the wires that run from your house to the street pole do so via a connector at the pole, This is how the Electric company disconnects a service. they just uncouple the connector on the pole

These meters could be installed on the poles rather than the sides of houses

That would shuffle the responsibility for the meters from the meter people and residents to the utility line crews, who would have to set them up where each transformer that feeds a set of residences is located. It could certainly be done, but you can imagine the bureaucracy you'd have to wade through to get the city planners and utility providers to change their system.

Explain what you mean by paranoia. Is it the cell tower people who feel the need to disguise their transmitters as trees, or the people asking questions why?

Just the general resistance to new technology. Smart meters are a good thing. Everytime something new comes out people freak out - it's annoying. It's sort of like the people saying that the music was better when they were kids, forgetting that the popular stuff was as crappy then as it is now and we only remember the good stuff. Or how every generation has the bad thing: Rock n' Roll was the devel, Comics: Evil!, TV = the death of society, Video Games? Kids don't get out enough!, iPad - kids don't know how to read. It's really sad that so many people don't see the pattern. I'm trying to be aware of this.

I don't think there's sufficient information to conclude that the EM soup we're swimming in doesn't have a detrimental effect and that smart meters aren't a contributory factor. A cursory look at the issue reveals that the way their output is specified doesn't give an accurate picture, and when combined with thousands of them in a condensed area, it's theoretically possible that hundreds of simultaneous pulses could produce unpredictable effects. IMO more study is needed in that regard. But it's not just the possible health risks that are my primary concern. What we know for sure is that the rights of people not to opt out of having these transmitters installed on their property is not being honored. They're being jammed down peoples throats whether they want them or not, often in sneaky ways. Last but not least, the utilities industry is notorious for scamming people ( think Enron ) and IMO these meters don't represent an appreciable advancement in useful technology so much as a way to force massive amounts of money out of consumers and funnel it to their buddies in manufacturing and sales.
