History Channel: The Real Face of Jesus?

Free episodes:

Good point Xylo. I might add that there is no proof of a Jesus "Christ" either. That being said "Jesus" was a very common name in "biblical" times.

Without trying to open a whole can of worms, I'd suggest that they should change the title to: "The real face of the shroud." As there is no conclusive proof that the shroud was a) a real burial shroud or b) that it ever touched the body of any human being named Jesus.

I agree. They did show off some impressive technology though.

I wish the History Channel actually relayed information that was credible for a change.

Geeeesh! Some folks aroung here are just grouchy. :pThe minute anybody gets mentioned they pull out the claws. Well, anyway, I like the History Channel documenteries. Like anything else there are well done ones and bad ones. Now I'm not a fundi but the ole "Jaysus never existed" line is the flavor of the month these days. I think there is plenty of evidence (not just biblical)that the Rabbi exisited. Now, the religion that followed and the faith of the world's Christians you can debate. But, anyway to each his own. I still like the History Channel. 8)

I don't agree with you here. There's very little ACTUAL evidence that the man existed. There's a few writings post script, but not much else.

But I do still like the History Channel as well, so at least we're in agreement there.

Well, I've looked into this rather extensively. I was a believer for most of my life. The research I did throughout the decades whittled away at my faith until the cognitive dissidence was too much to bear however. Interestingly I have found that many believers who would argue fervently with me about it have never even read the Bible all the way through even one time. Amazing but true.

The fact is that many would-be messiahs populated the landscape back then. Most of what you think you know about the Jesus of the Bible was written by people who could never have met him or anyone that had, even if he had existed. In my experience, the true history of the Bible itself is enough to turn anyone off to it that bothers to research it with a critical eye. Also, it has been my experience as a believer that the Bible does not tell the truth about the way the world works, human beings act, and certainly ... most certainly its promises are untrue. In short it doesn't work as advertised and you are supposed to accept this for any number of reasons like dispensations, misinterpretation, lack of faith and so forth. Therefore the whole Shroud business is completely immaterial in my view.

Incidentally, I am so programmed by over three decades of immersion into the Christian mythos that I still catch myself unconsciously mouthing prayers to a god I don't believe exists. Some of it is just tough to shake ... I feel like Pavlov's dog at times.

Everyone is welcome to their own beliefs of course and I understand the incredible difficulty in abandoning a faith you have been raised in either as part of a family or a nation. Those folks have my sympathy. However, I feel the Christian mythos along with Islamic and Jewish ones are inherently destructive to the human spirit (not in the supernatural sense of course) and responsible for many of the neurosis and social upheaval in the world today. Any "good" that is credited to have come from any of them is actually the work of human beings and not supernatural forces.

the bible is pretty scary. i was raised in church, was confirmed, taught sunday school, etc etc etc... and after reading the bible word for word i quit the church. i spent a few years going to bible study groups and educating folks on the atrocities held within it. truly shocking stuff.

Hey, look at that, we agree on something! :)
Although I have probably not read anywhere near as much of the bible as you. I've read the new testament (years ago), but not much of the Old Testament apart from Exodus and Genesis.

I challange street preachers with this;
Provide for me 5 FIRST HAND OUTSIDE THE BIBLE REFRENCES to jesus.
they generneanly start quoating the Bible then I say OUTSIDE the bible...
then they quoate Josepus...then I say FIRST HAND...truth is there ARE NONE!

Not entirely accurate. There IS the gospel of Judas, which has not been proven to be legitimate, but neither has it been entirely disproven.

Personally I don't believe that this man/messiah/god/christ existed either...but the thought is intriguing that a "person" was created from prophecy, then myth and then religion. If true, it's a wonderful study in the ability of people to be willingly controlled.

I think religion was probably started about the time we humans became agricultural. We probably needed some way to explain the lack of crops or something to help with a more bountiful harvest.

I always figured it was created by a father trying to get his kids to stop asking "why" questions. It's the easiest answer..."Because god/thor/zeus/ra/<insert favorite deity's name here> said so."
