I think religion was probably started about the time we humans became agricultural. We probably needed some way to explain the lack of crops or something to help with a more bountiful harvest.

I think there is some evidence that the source of religion is actually neurological. People hallucinate for various reasons under various conditions. The misinterpretation of what essentially are brain malfuctions has led to all sorts of nonsense.
