I think we're forgetting that there was a crew at the ranch noting any significant activity. Scientists showed up when the crew let them know something was going on. Remember the trailer the bull was stuffed into? If I remember correctly (it's been a while since I read it too) that trailer belonged to the scientific staff present on the ranch. Maybe Siani can tell us for sure. I've loaned my copy of the book out. There was a constant monitoring for a good while. The phenomena just didn't play by the scientists' rules for study.

From my recollection the trailer was their to function as a lab when the team was present. Also, there were camera's setup. Do you remember they spoke about one camera being completely gutted and nothing being caught on video from the other camera across from it? I was under the impression that the "Gormans" or whatever their real names are would call the scientists whenever the strange stuff started to happen.

Well, I do have a faulty memory and it's been a good while. I just never got the impression there wasn't someone there, at least for a while. Since we all seem to have "impressions" ... LOL ... I'll certainly try to check it out. Think I'll write to Knapp. (Later. I'm whipped.)

The thing that disturbed me most about the book was the way a shadowy entity was seen "crawling" from what appeared to be an opening or portal. Its "crawl" appeared to be a struggle but eventually the "thing" broke through into our reality and scampered away.
I suppose because of shows like Star Trek, etc. we're used to portals being used by advanced beings in shiny suits who are open to a nice cup of tea and a good sit down, not anamalistic wild things who run amok and scare us from the shadows.
This "portal" incident hinted at Lovecraftian things lurking in the beyond, yet the entities tormented and butchered cattle not humans (as far as I can recall - I read the book a while ago, too).
I wonder why they made such a distinction in their bloodthirsty activities...

Anyway, I can't believe the area isn't being monitored anymore. Then again, I suppose the incidents have their own timeframe; any scientific "stakeout" would have to be over many years with all the attendant costs.
