Interesting article from UK

Free episodes:

Regarding this incident, the "charming" Kay Burley on this lunchtime's Sky news stated,

"UFO fanatics are intrigued by this."

So there you go, my fellow Paracasters. We're all fanatics.
And I thought it was just the Muslims getting it in the neck.

One of those 'fanatics' (!) Jenny Randles posted that she suspects the main sighting to that of our beloved friend Venus, which is particualry prominent in the sky at the moment. She also informed the mailing list that that the missing blade is not actually missing, but undergoing tests in Germany to illuminate the cause of the failure.

Apparently for those in the UK ITV news (This morning) tomorrow morning is running a 'debate' on this (cue Nick Pope i suppose) for those that are interested.

Too bad there wasn't a camera set-tup over the farm. Probably be tampered with somehow, though.

Whatever took out that fan did a pretty good job at leaving the others intact. Maybe it was lightning.

yup, and theres the fact that the other "blade" hasnt been found yet apparently.

I guess that the tentacles could have been a static discharge leading between an object hovering above the area and the grounded turbines. Whatever it was, maybe strayed too close to a rotating prop and made contact with the blade?

It is good to see these reports in the mainstream media though.

The BBC article and sound byte say that the missing blade was sent off for analysis. It had broken off and was laying on the ground. The article suggests that one of the other turbines anti-icing may have failed and when the ice built up on the prop was too heavy it was fling off. Then it may have hit the damaged turbine. this seems plausible to me.

The problem with this type of story going "mainstream" is that it is too easy to turn it into a joke. It seems like they are taking it semi-seriously. Most likely they see that it is a slow news day and this will setup a followup curiosity piece for the future. They can tease the audience with the old "Remember that Turbine that was crushed by the UFO, we have the story next... and you won't believe what we found!" crap. Then it will end with "So it was just ice." then some jackass will make some quip about little green guys and windmills. Then its off to some other worthless bit of "news". Trust me, there is NOTHING good about this story getting attention.

Wasnt the blade sent to Germany or something?..... seems a bit odd for it to go all that way for analysis imo

Good point but there is testimony RE lights in the area, they may remain unexplained even if the turbine damage is explained..... doesnt matter what the end result is, not enough people take the UFO subject seriously :(

made the 6:00am news here today complete with the theme from the X files........

Not surprised, good for Mark Snow in Royalties though..... Hey, maybe hes out every night with flashlights, chinese lanterns and fireworks drumming up a few UFO sightings..... He knows the next morning the royalties will start pouring in from the news stations ;)

Not a bad report with some slightly more serious music bed...... shame about the "UFO-Geek" comment and stupid effects at the end. :(

Interesting story. But I hope it turns out to be something natural. I would hate to think we're being visited by drunk aliens, who can travel across interstellar space (or dimensions) and have countless cubic meters of sky to maneuver in, but don't realize when they're getting to close to a windmill.
I have trouble believing that.
But then maybe they attacked the windmill! Though this sounds equally implausible.

I very much doubt that UFO would ever hit anything given their ability to perform impossible manoevres and ability to blink in and out of existence. I think more down to earth explanations are likely. I have quite a few wind farms in my local region and they frequently get damaged. One came down due to simple mechanical stress in moderately windy conditions and didn't look too dissimilar to the picture in the news report. The blades are subject to the same stresses as any other mechanical object except that they are out in all kinds of weather as Poi mentioned. I think I saw a news item on turbines a while back that said they were most prone to bird collisions and lightning strikes -2 things you can't prevent 100% of the time even with preventative measures in place.

KC.

The Grey From La Mancha.

You would hope that people would recognise fireworks wouldnt you. Mind you, this is the UK, some people here still go out on nights with a full moon and point in wonder at it

Dont hold that against people. I love the sight of a giant full moon!

Let me guess, on the Today show? Those guys are fucking idiots. (so are the other guys on Channel 7)

Although to his credit, the last time they did a 'UFO story' Carl (the main presenter) said he believe there is something to the phenomenon.

Oh come on people. These wind turbines break ALL THE TIME. And the UK is filled with alcoholics. (Try having just one with Nick Pope.) This one is a big set up designed to make the whole serious UFO community look bad. Don't keep falling for it!
