Nothin' to see here
So I'm posting tHis from an iPhone! (damn is this thing sexy- I'm scared to touch it)

excuse my ignorance but is there an alt mobile version of th site I should use when browsing on iPhone? (and other sites too)

If I'm checking the posts, I'll use Safari, if I want to reply to something, I wait till I get to a computer.

I'm just not too huge on the keyboard for long msgs.

Yeah Safari works great. Even thinking about using Safari on my computer.

And yeah I agree with you guys.... iPhone great for browsing but best to leave replies etc to a larger device.

Safari's a great browser - much faster than IE or Firefox. A heck of a lot less buggy, too.

Safari still occasionally cannot handle higher level coding for heavy duty web apps and has minimal user options... thus the speed. That being said, it's pretty sleek for simple browsing.

What do you mean by "higher level coding"? Safari 4 passes the Acid3 test, something at which Internet Explorer fails miserably. It vies with Google Chrome as having the speediest rendering. Any site coded in compliant or reasonably compliant code will be totally accessible. Sites that are so messed up that they require Internet Explorer might present problems -- but that's the fault of the people who developed those sites for failing to recognize that at least a third of Internet visitors don't use IE. And I'm being generous. Some surveys put IE's worldwide share (all versions) at under 60%.

I've only come across it in the functionality of some AJAX coding but there's several more apps heavy on the client side components still unavailable for Safari. To be fair though, some of these I (more for my own curiosity than anything) have disabled the browser check and they did actually work though were a tad clunky at times. As for IE, while the latest version is much better, I would be more than happy to pretend it doesn't exist (Oh, how I wish our clients would let us.)

IMHO Chrome is much faster than Safari. Plus I like the layout a lot more.
Actually most every published benchmark of the latest versions of both show near-identical performance in most respects. Indeed, both Chrome and Safari use the very same rendering engine -- known as WebKit.

it's been a few months since I last used safari on anything but my 3GS, but I've really become smitten with Chrome over the summer.

It's totally impossible to compare a mobile browser with a desktop one. Not even in the ballpark. You want to download Safari 4 as a test and see how it fares.

Oh, I know, that's why I specified that it'd been months since I used safari on anything but my phone. The last time I was using it was on a macbook, and it worked pretty well, but the laptop was old and that might have attributed to the slower feeling than chrome. Though even on an old macbook it was faster than firefox and IE.

Ok guys, a couple things.

Which apps MUST I HAVE? (Ive checked a few top 10 lists etc, but recommendations are always the best way).

And can someone recommend a good pouch/condom/cover? A nice sleek cover that covers the screen too, basically to protect from crap in my pocket/car/bag. Should be easy to slip in and out but not so easy that it falls out.

Thanks!

For a good condom, go with an Otterbox, they are beeftits.

As for apps, here's a good run down;

Games (free)
-flood it - a cool puzzle game that takes about a minute to finish win or lose, personally, I love it

- Tap defense - Tower defense style game

- Luxtouch - essentially it's Risk, computer does the dice rolls, great game, I actually like the free version more than the paid version

- Space Deadbeef - R-type with clumsier controls, I wouldn't pay for it, but thankfully it's free

- Jelly Car - if not for the sounds alone this game is fun

- The Papi games - there's 4 or 5 of them, they are short little games that require very little time to play, check them out at least

- Tangram games - puzzles with different shapes, there is also the zentomino and tanzen games, I like puzzles, so I picked up all four

- Labyrinth 3D - cool to show people the accelerometer at work

- Scramble 2 - I can't remember if this was paid or not, if it was it was like 2 bucks. It's essentially boggle.

Topple - The name says it all.

Paid Games:
All these games will most likely have a lite version, that way you can check them out. I don't think the games like monopoly, scrabble, and Life have lite versions though, but I could be wrong.

- GeoDefense - Not expensive, tower defense style game. I play this all the time, it's great.

- iShoot - Cannon style game with terrain, you'd recognize it if you saw it.

- Scrabble

- Civ Rev

- GD Swarm

- Sonifi - youtube this, it is awesome. Music playing game.

Useful apps:
- 9-toolbox - Calculator, tip calculator, holiday calender, and some other crap. It's free, so why not.

- Units - a unit converter, handy and free

- All recipes - food is awesome, what else is there to say, I've used this frequently

- Your fave sports teams and leagues most likely have apps, at least the Toronto Maple Leafs have a few

- Dictionary - brought to you by the wonderful people at dictionary.com

- Electric tool kit - Ohms law, and other reference tools for work with electricity

- Cooliris - this and an app called "Backgrounds" are great for finding pictures to use as wallpaper and whatnot

- Starmap - syncs with your location and shows you what stars, planets, constellations, and galaxies are visible. A stargazers must.

- Skype - Gee, I wonder why that might be useful

- WeatherEye - name says it all

- Camera genius - gives you more tools to use your camera. Zoom and timer are key features.

That's all you get from me for now. There are so many apps out there and most have lite versions. I don't recommend trusting most of the reviews that you'll find in the app store, everyones a critic, and in most cases, also a douchebag. As for actual tools, I don't have much knowledge, I don't really need anything on it beyond email sync, and that comes with it. You'd have to google a professional review to see how one stacks up with another as they are fairly expensive and require a good amount of thought before purchasing. That's what I'd do at least.
