Is SETI a Silly Effort To Investigate?

Free episodes:

An advanced civilization just happens across a narrow band of radio or television frequencies sent from a remote arm of the galaxy and manages to find our planet? Sorry, I'm not buying that bill of goods. Fund SETI to your hearts content.
It seems that you don't understand SETI very well. Can I recommend some basic reading?

love that seti/ufo pic ufology! Searching for signals in deep space while ignoring the classic cases of high tech vehicle encounters. (assuming the eth as source, of course)

There is no ETH. I wish there were, but before we can call something a hypothesis, we have to have some idea what we're talking about. Both true believers and dogmatic skeptics need to see this as an occasion for epistemic humility.

Why no public funding ?Is it so bad ?And what is the cost of SETI ?

They could use a lot more money. At present, the SETI Institute has to rent out use of the Allen Telescope Array and can only use it for SETI about half the time. Ideally, the array would be much larger. They could do this for just a few million more a year - chump change for the government - hell, that's about what it costs to repair an overpass!

What is also needed is a full scale ARGUS omnidirectional array. The one at Ohio State is just a little demo model. It would only cost a few million to build a serious one.

Thats because over-pass's are more important Paul.

Below is a list of Seti's top 10 achievements.

The word "hypothesis" can be used informally and in that context the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis is a perfectly fair title for the idea that the alien craft reported by some witnesses might be of extraterrestrial origin.

Encarta:
hy·poth·e·sis [hi póth?ssiss] (plural hy·poth·e·ses [hi póth? s?z]) noun
1. theory needing investigation: a tentative explanation for a phenomenon, used as a basis for further investigation
• The hypothesis of the big bang is one way to explain the beginning of the universe.
2. assumption: a statement that is assumed to be true for the sake of argument
• That is what would logically follow if you accepted the hypothesis.

Oh my Ghod... where DID you get that UFO, Billy Meier's barn?

That would be the classic "Sport Model" purported ( courtesy of Bob Lazar ) to be under study at Area 51. Of course anyone familiar with ufology would already know that. Fewer I imagine, would venture a guess as to where the radio telescope in the image is located.

Here is something you can enlightened me on. How much money are you sending SETI? You mention that Paul Allen and Jodie Foster are doing major funding. There is an old saying... money talks, BS walks. Or are you just a mouthpiece for SETI?

Why are we so ready to make contact with what I would assume is a more advanced civilization? I think we should clean ourselves up first. Stop having casual wars, cure our malignant diseases and feed the hungry souls of the planet before we invite any other creature to look upon us. It's embarrassing really.

And like Hawking said, what if they don't come in peace?

I was attending Pierce College in the west San Fernando Valley at the exact same time as Bob. I actually recall seeing him on campus once or twice.

Interesting. Personally, I'm not convinced Lazar's story is true. Knapp seems to be a proponent though. But then again he's been deeply involved with the story, so maybe his personal investment in the story is partly responsible for what comes across to me as a pro-Lazar position.

Lazar's story/s have been around awhile Randal, anything ring true to you, or is it a patchwork of half-truths.

I tend to go with Stan Friedman's assessment. Stan, being a real physicist, suggests ... well let's let Stan say it in his own words ( below ). Why Knapp seems to put so much stock into him seems more about presenting the story than verifying the claims.
