Major Austerity riots in Spain

To add to this is the reason why the economic recovery is going so bad as this form of recovery is not being used.

The ethos now is to cut tax for the super rich in the hope that they will create job growth which they are not.

I will go out on a limb and say that the problems we are now seeing in the world are being compounded directly or indirectly by peak oil.

Just a thought and it seems to be adding up that way.

Being "rich" is a part of the problem, its a form of hoarding.
The more thats hoarded at the top, the less there is below for everyone else.

And of course they want to keep building that hoard, so more and more is siphoned from below.

The prognosticators of overpopulation apocalypse so numerous in the 60's were merely a bit ahead of their time. The world is round after all. Spheres are finite, along with whatever resources are on or in them. One doesn't have to do the math to see the larger game is zero sum. Anybody check the price of copper lately? Our only hope may be the human tendency to produce smaller families as standards of living go up. But that is a shaky bet.

The left-right schism is deeply rooted in a consequence of this. The materially successful are doing what humans naturally do, trying to hang on to what they have acquired. The "masses" (a very loaded term) know instinctively that they are losing the game of socio-economic musical chairs, so they are also doing what humans naturally do--finding a means to survive. The majority of people will (I think) respond with a combination of appeal to the larger collective (are YOU, Mr. delegate going to cut off grandma's Medicare?), or by a "circling the wagons" of those they perceive to be members of their own tribe. Ancient instincts are yet at work in human affairs. Whether they serve in a 21st century world or not.

Our only hope is the same old "c" word: Compromise, some kind of balance. It remains to be seen what will transpire before H sapiens is in a mood conducive to balance.
