Mars Rover On Target for Landing
04 August 2012, 09:33 AM EDT
NASA's huge Mars rover Curiosity is just under one day from landing on the Red Planet and right on target, NASA says. Landing set for Sunday, Aug. 5 at 10:31 p.m. PDT (that's 1:31 a.m. EDT, 0531 GMT on Monday, Aug. 6).
In fact, Curiosity is so on target, that NASA has cancelled maneuver to refine its course. "As of 12:35 p.m. today PDT (3:35 p.m. EDT), the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft was approximately 468,000 miles (753,200 kilometers) from Mars, or a little less than twice the distance from Earth to the moon. It is traveling at about 8,000 mph (3,576 meters per second)," NASA says.

Unfortunately, It's gonna go offline at the last minute like most other Mars missions. What's the bet it wont be landing where it looks like there is a forest or in the cydonia region. It will be somewhere very boring.

I could hear the cheering from pasadena all the way from my place :p

I'm sorta struck on the differences of the methods used on landing their crafts, from spirit and opportunity's rather inglouriously being dropped to the surface swathed in balloons to the intricate sky crane on curiosity. the former two were a bit of an overachiever on longevity, hopefully curiosity will strive to the same

I can imagine what a buzz it must be to be on the team that sent a succesfull mission to Mars, considering all the strange failures.

Top marks to all involved. I think it is just amazing humans are sending such stuff so far away. We really are not so earth-bound now and it is thanks to the hard work of many people in NASA and related agencies.

I had an opportunity to speak with some of the people behind this mission at the last open house in may, many of them were so young I felt so humble on what they were about to achieve.
