Michio Kaku: we are a type 0 civilization

This issue is a mathematical one. It has nothing to do with anything but use of energy, period. .

At scales we can't imagine yet. A type 1 civilization controls... volcanos , temperature on a planetary scale and can build cities on oceans. Its about the energy required to control your environment at different levels (planetary, solar system, galactic)

... Imagine you could set the temperature of the entire planet with a thermostat. With that kind of power, there's no reason you couldn't propulse the entire planet out of its orbit and start travelling to younger star systems.... .... somehow the idea of Nibiru doesn't sound that crazy anymore LOL

Forgive the cynicism, but I don't think we as a species have the wisdom, ethics, and compassion to be a Type O civilization, let alone a Type 1.

If I'm reading the concept correctly, we are definitely a Type 0. The rational for using the 0,1,2, etc numbering system seems to be to allow for the concept of not reaching a single positive digit level, yet. Also, the fact that we are, in and of itself, conscious of the actual concept of civilization typing is enough to place us in the Type 0 category. At any rate, by calling humans Type 0, Kaku is basically only asserting that human civilization is currently somewhere below Type I, not that outrageous a call.
