I started out, asking myself, why? Why some of the speakers at an event of this nature would be there, but then I realized the old addage: "The answer, to 99 out of 100 questions is; MONEY."
This is a given. I would not begrudge that if they were giving something of value.
Another aspect is the ego thing. Some of the nastiest presences in this "field" aren't making any money to speak of, but are instead there for some kind of ego reinforcement. (One case I can think of in particular is pretty much the same as a schoolyard bully.) This is a subject matter where socially marginalized individuals can make a name for themselves.
The audience is to blame for this because they are either too gullible to figure it out, are profiting from it on some financial or emotional level, or are unwilling to speak up and do something about it.
It's a huge problem, and the only solution that sort or makes sense to me is to force the subject into the mainstream, which is only slightly less gullible.
