This isn't really a picture, but it's kind of interesting. If anyone watches Kitchen Nightmares, the episode with Levanti's in the city of Beaver was filmed in my area. Actually at one point during a travel montage I saw a brief clip of the main street in New Brighton (right at 4:55 in the video), which we travel frequently (that's less than 10 minutes from where we live, it's basically one town over with the city of Beaver not much farther than that). Here's the full episode of anyone wants to watch:

We have never been there, but we plan on going eventually. :)

And here are some pics I took of ducks a few years back at North Park (that's in Allegheny county, not too far from here):

And this was a picture I took of a natural gas burn off thingy (I believe it's one of those fracking things they do when leasing someone's property). My husband and I were out rather late one evening when we noticed this really intense light. We decided to travel the nearby back roads and see where it was coming from because it was unusual. It was the light produced by this burn off. I have to say if I lived nearby, I would probably not have appreciated it (it was much brighter than it appears in the photo. It was almost like daylight in the surrounding area). This was when we lived in our old place, so it was closer to Zelienople, PA:

And this is a panoramic pic I took at our old place, it looked really nice in the fall:

And, since we have expanded to "places people have visited", these are some pictures I took while on vacation in Florida something like five years ago. My husband's mom and stepfather lived there at the time. These were taken on Caladesi island (which is how we came up with the name for our female Aussie):

And we visited Clearwater:

And the grand finale, this creepy street performer in Clearwater that was supposed to be an alien. I'm still not convinced that he wasn't an ACTUAL alien. He was muttering into a microphone with this really spaced out music playing low on a little radio he was carrying. I would love to meet the guy when he was out of character to see if he really was as weird as he seemed:

Our village is usually below the snowline, but it does happen.
As for development our local council is really strict, so while we have a Mcdonalds at the base of the mountains and one on the other side on the opposite base, they wont let them build up here, no KFC, Pizza hut etc.

I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. I'm only in my 30s but, having lived in the area my whole life, I have seen so much beautiful landscape torn down. A balance would be nice. I am all for conveniences but not at the expense of everything else. Besides, it's probably better for your health to NOT have those establishments close by. :p And it would be a tragedy to ruin such amazing natural views. Sort of like how thousands of years worth of history was lost recently when a Mayan pyramid in Belize was destroyed.

Since I'm totally Bogarting this thread right now, here is a pic of the damage they did to our lovely view of the hillside I mentioned previously. :( This was taken recently, before spring really set it (it's greener now, but the giant swath of nothingness is still quite visible):

Let me take you inside my home - here's a picture of our current project - finishing the basement:

The area you live in looks very scenic.

Your home project looks to be coming along nicely.Nice job!

I took pics of some recent projects. I believe it is a good way to look back on what was done.

So far I have - I installed new floors, remodeled all bathrooms, moved doors, added windows, built a wraparound porch, sided the house, remodeled the kitchen, removed a wooden deck and added a patio, added a foundation for a future room, built a bookcase/ fireplace built in, put black granite on my fireplace, upgraded my electrical service, installed air conditioning whew! You get the idea.I know I've left out a few things.

One thing is a certainty. It never gets done completely. My most recent project was installing a pool heat pump. That involved an 80' run of #6 wire 20' of it in a trench 18" deep. My next project involves planting lots of pachysandra and liriope. It makes me tired thinking about all of it, but having pics to look at gives me a feeling of accomplishment.

Would love to see the before and after pics.

Do you work for free? Because you're welcome to come and remodel my house. :D

Well, not much to see around here, but I did a little hiking tour today and actually didn't forget to pack the camera..

green2-jpg.2848

A general view of where I live. Lots of rolling hills, fields, meadows and forests. It's actually supposed to be a low mountain range, the name of which would translate to something like "The Western Woods". In roman times, the whole area was one big primordial forest named the hercynian woods, which were supposed to be misty, swampy, dark and cold. I guess they were just missing the mediterranian climate.

It's actually mostly not that misty, cold and dark here. But then, there isn't not much of the old forest and swamps left, either.

chapel.jpg

A small chapel 5 mins from where I live, built in 1926 (EDIT: corrected from 1923). There is a legend that a soldier, coming home from WW I got lost and saw a light apparition in this place which led him to his village. He promised St. Mary (who he thought the apparition was) that he would have a chapel built here. Which I guess is probably just a rural myth, but it's one of the things that got me interested in "mystery light" type phenomena.

the_old_cross-jpg.2849

An old stone cross which once probably stood at a wayside. There is a totally weathered inscription dating it to 1735 (EDIT: corrected from 17362), with a few lines written underneath the year, unfortunately the text is not really readable any more. The place is supposed to have been the site of a robbery with many people killed.

round_mountain-jpg.2850

The round "mountain" in the distance has a hillfort dating back to celtic times and was probably already a holy place for pre-celtic settlers. There are some impressive stone formations on top of it, which are obviously getting used as a "place of worship" by some neo-druidic cult every year. Although there was an archeological dig in the 1920s, the site was later closed and never continued. A shrine dedicated to St. Mary and a legend of three hags living in a cave there, to whom the villagers would bring food and drink up to medieval times seems to indicate that a form of the old, pre-celtic "Earth Mother" beliefs might have survived there well into christian times.

Erm... and that would be Lucky, who had the magpie incident...

Dunno why you were down-playing your surrounding area Polter, looks pretty darn beautiful to me.
If it was up to me, it would be a condition of being a forum member that you had to post some phots!

To be honest, I was thinking of Chris's photos when I typed that sentence. I liked the hiking tour this afternoon, but man, if that could have been the Grand Canyon instead...*sigh*

But thanks :D

Well, I guess it's a matter of finding the time. When you started the thread I realized that I didn't have any digital fotos of my area, so I had to snap some first. I wanted to do so twice before but the weather didn't play along and once, when we were doing another hiking trip, I actually forgot the camera.
Others may have the same kind of problems, I guess.

We went to the local green house and picked up some stuff. I took a few shots while we were there.
1.jpg
nearly 90F and high humidity created the atmospheric haze... or it could be methane from all the animals in the area.

2.jpg
the put the bigger greenhouse on right on top of their big chicken coup.

3.jpg
Winter buggy.

4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg
love the black and white dog and black buggy so i went with high contrast black and white for a few shots.
i like them.

7.jpg

very peaceful at this place. no electricity, no motors.. no internet the kids were so cute but i respected their wishes to not photograph them.

Look how freaked out the girl on the right is. I imagine he is one of those street performers taking a break but shit, he's gotta know he is gonna freak people out?

Reminds me of a real life incident / prank gone wrong some mates of mine were involved in.

During the 80's the govt ran an AIDS awareness TV ad, which featured the grim reaper bowling, the pins were people

Ah Youtube, they have everything it seems

Anyway a bunch of my mates dressed up as grim reapers , (no broom handle was safe from a quick conversion into a scythe with the addition of a cardboard blade),went down to the local bowling alley, figuring it would be funny.

It didnt end well, they were all kicked out and the police called, and those the owner recognised got lifetime bans at that alley

How serene! It's a gorgeous landscape. I would love to wake up and see that every day. :) Thanks for the local history as well, it adds even more character to the photos (not that they needed it!:) )
