Agreed re Lindhoff. I was pretty fanatical about Lost but even I have to admit I don't think the writers had a clue how to finish it all way back when there was only season 1 !

I can only imagine Prometheus was intentionally left as it is, not answering all poss questions.

I enjoyed the movie a great deal although I thought there were a couple of glaring plot problems. The things are so stupefying (for example: the map maker gets lost) I feel like that the Blue-Ray is going to have to have some deleted scenes on it or a Director's cut that will fill in the gaps. I'm sure something got cut that probably shouldn't have. It seems obvious that there is something missing at the end, perhaps another movie, that actually bridges Prometheus and Alien where the current life cycle (implant, small birth, growth through shedding, implant) of the alien itself is established.

I wonder if the opening scene isn't a rival clan of Engineers creating the ultimate biological weapon, namely humans, to use against the Engineers found by the Prometheus? Are the aliens meant to represent clones or a perhaps a biological ideal their race has engineered themselves into?

theres also the possibility that the engineers just go around terra forming and that David said someting to piss them off.

What did DAVID SAY?????

plot explanation - What did David say to the engineer in Prometheus? - Movies and TV Beta - Stack Exchange

I think the Engineer was outraged by the fact that David was a robot and not by what he was saying. He seemed to have grokked David's nature and then immediately ripped his head off. He may have said something like, "We are from Earth." and the Engineer thought, "Oh no, the damn things are loose and making non-biological technology, a violation of all that is holy!"

however David says that stuff earlier about meeting your maker and being disapointed by what the dude says to him on the prometheus. i thought there could be an alterior motive.

I think one of the main points is the absurdity of looking for meaning from outside of the self. That the motivations, intent, or purposes of the beings, forces, or natural laws responsible for our existence is irrelevant to the individual as there may not be (and perhaps logically would not be) any motivation, intent, or purpose that fits into our frame of reference. Worse yet, any purpose we may appear to serve may simply be a convenience or a motivation supplied to achieve an unrelated end. I like bananas. Do I like them because that is just me liking the flavor or am I responding to a deeper and unconscious need of my organism (the larger self) for potassium? That isn't the best example but I think it gets across the point.

I though the 3-D was a bit weak? It did not seem to have the depth that say, Avatar did. Mind you, I think Avatar has the best 3-D of any action film. All CGI movies in 3-D look pretty good also but Prometheus not so much. I may watch it the standard way next - it is sooo worthy of a second look quite soon after the first.

I didn't like the movie. Honestly I expected a lot more in terms of plot development and acting. I felt like it was all over the place with major plot holes. I thought it was mediocre at best with pretty cool special effects. I am a fan of Alien franchise and thought that the first two Alien movies were far superior to this.

The first two told far simpler stories, especially the first one. Yes, not everything is spelled out in clear black and white in Prometheus but I suspect that A) Some things are being held back for a sequel and B) Scott might have been forced by the studio to hack it to get the length down (This happens all the time. I don't know if its the case but I just watched John Carter earlier today and that really gave me the impression of something mangled by studio-execs obsessed with the idea that nothing should be longer than 2 hours) and if so a director's cut that is more complete will probably be released at some point.

I really hated all those 90's Batman movies and I wasn't expecting much from the new Batman with Christian Bale but I was happily very, very wrong. Nameless, I could not agree more in that this is a good year for sci fi fans and the new darknight movie promises to be great.

Sometimes you dread a sequel or part III but sometimes they are really good. Dark Night is a good example along with Star Wars and LOTR II&III.

I think there is a good chance that Ridley Scott was forced to make cuts that could affect the film's ability to narrate the plot clearly although I think there is also in part a wish to leave a few things open-ended. Because of the way the movie Prometheus ended I think another movie could go in a few directions and maybe that is the idea behind not tying up all the plot loose ends.

Ridley Scott doesn't strike me as the kind of director that wants to do many sequels and to me there is a high chance there will be a sequel to Prometheus but it wont be directed by Scott.

Oh, and btw, the producers tried to ruin Aliens. The cut Cameron wanted to go with was a good deal longer than what ended up in theaters. The studio forced him to take a hatchet to it. So against his will he cut out several scenes (One of which involved Ripley being told that her daughter had died. The omission of that scene, later restored in the director's cut, really pissed Weaver off). The new cut was in the area of 2 1/4 hours. The studio still wasn't satisfied. They wanted it down to 2 hours, whether it made the plot nonsensical or not a moot point to them. But Cameron outright refused to cut anymore. He ended up winning only be agreeing to direct 2 more films for them, one of which, The Abyss, would go on to get hacked as well. The cut-up ending of the theatrical version of The Abyss doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The restored ending in the director's cut is a lot better.
