should we have spent billions smashing protons together ?

Should we have spent billions smashing protons together ?

Or should we have spent the money fighting Climate Change or Malaria ?

What are your thoughts ?
No not at that price! Feed the poor and homeless around the world first ,then we can do projects like this. not being ,a do gooder or anything, but i think we should look after people who have less than we do, it is called a conscience, it is pity humanity has lost this principle.

They could come away from these experiments with some tangible offshoot but then again they might not.

It could be nothing more than Scientific Naval Gazing.

Understanding how EVERYTHING were created is not Scientific naval gazing. Knowledge is key to our evolution.

If a bunch of John Lear type idiots were not running around screaming about the end of the world, you probably wouldn't have even heard about CERN.

People are going to Temples to Pray and someone even killed themselves out of fear from the media reports regarding CERN.

Now, how do you think the majority of the world would react if there was Disclosure? I've said it before and I'll keep saying it. The world would burn.

This is exactly why "They" don't show themselves.

I think there should have been a vote, if there wasn't.

I am personally not too thrilled about the money being spent, but I am but one person. I think that money could have been put towards something else spiritual (not religious) or paranormal. Something that would really bust paradigms. But they don't want that. Billions of dollars to make baby steps is ok to them. Don't get me wrong, I hope something good comes of this. Why would I not? But I suspect, it will just be a little blip. Cause in the ends, our tools don't make theories. We do.

They won't understand how everything was created via this. That's a pipe dream. They may get closer, when it comes to THIS universe. Or this realm. It won't be the end of the road. It might lead to new questions.

I was actually hoping the world would end today. It's overrated and a good way to go. Beats the other ways of death I'm heading toward. Plus, we all would have went at the same time. No mourning.

No, we should continue to spend billions killing each other and trying to control each other.

The LHC is a monumental achievement whether it answers the questions it seeks or not. It is a tribute to the curious nature of human beings that care about their origins. These seemingly unanswerable questions lie at the forefront of our creativity and ingenuity.

It just seems that many people have somehow snuffed out completely their desire to question reality. We have become so programmed into everyday commercialism, nationalism, media-ism, and many other superficial -isms. So much that we can't even think past our monthly bills , high gas prices, celebrity and political infidelity, and soccer practice.

I, for one, applaud this project and look forward to learning more about the fundamental properties of the reality I live in. It is projects like this that can and will have a great effect on humanity in the future(my guess). Screw the money. We waste more money on ridiculous things like war, political campaigns, and so forth. Maybe Michael Phelps, who'll reportedly be worth a billion, can dish out some money to the poor and hungry. Overpopulation is another topic altogether.

I think these scientific questions are important. There is something in the human condition that compels us to seek the answers. I couldn't ever seek the answers alone, so I'm thankful we have projects that attempt to understand and utilize the secrets of space and time. Perhaps the LHC leads to entirely new paradigms.

And BTW Aaron, maybe this is money spent on the spiritual. The weirdness of quantum aspects certainly could bend down that rabbit hole. We'll see.

The people doing the analysis have done ruled out any spiritual significance. They are lost in their own maze. Ever wanting to see smaller and smaller particles. They'll always find them, which is a hall of mirrors.

Although I said I rather the money be spent on better things, I could also say, that I am glad it wasn't spent on lesser. I'm real interested in physics btw. But the 10 billion dollar cost in which I read, seemed a bit steep. To me. I am but one man though, and only expressing my one man opinion. I understand the rest of you people have that right in which may disagree. 10 billion dollars is steep to me. If anyone can show me it's cheaper, I'll be grateful and more on the bandwagon. I could have read some dipshit inaccurate info. It came from the news after all, and they often fuk things up. I do NOT claim to be an expert on this matter, and I am willing to learn. My opinions expressed comes forth from my current understanding, or misunderstanding.

We spend $720 million a DAY in Iraq.

Thats a LHC in what, a couple of weeks?? God is that right??

Anyway, I don't know how you can neccessarily preclude any spiritual significance of the nature of the cosmos unless you were some fundamentalist that wouldn't even permit it into the set of possibilities. But you're right, that seems to be the case with a lot of scientists. But some not as much as others. Interpretation is often biased.

Speaking of the money, it's a good thing we don't have to build that thing in "Contact" isn't it??

Aaron - Over time this experiment will start a revolution in the physics world. I believe once they truly understand the origins of our universe that it will open the flood gates into crossing into other realms. To get to those places we need a starting off point, and this is it. I don't think its a hall of Mirrors, This isn't a spiritual experiment. This is about duplicating and validating the big bang and why it happened.

The 10 billion was spread over like 14 years. and isn't that like what the US spends each day in Iraq?

Isn't this kind of like saying "I wonder if I should have killed Ed?" after they've buried him? It's over, it's done.

If we are ever going to invent things than can manipulate gravity, then this thing is an essential part of the process, since we don't know that much about gravity and this machine is built to help us solve that problem.

The fact is, this machine will improve our knowledge of gravity and tell us whether current theories involving the higgs particle are correct. I'm not expecting anti gravity for at least 100 years, probably more like 200, but without this machine we would never have it.

Once and if (a BIG if) it is possible to manipulate gravity, all sorts of sci-fi things become possible, such as force field, space travel etc.

Thats just looking into the distant future though, it will really help us now also. Don't expect to see too many results for a couple of years though

It was on the news there about a hour ago, That some girl in India had committed suicide because she thought the world was going to end.How many more of those incidents will occur before this is all over. I think they should have just done the experiment in full , fear sometimes can be a disease for certain people.

I have no idea about this stuff, but if this project has the potential to dramatically increase our knowledge base as a species so we can create technology that improves our daily lives, then right on. We gotta take some risks to continue to move forward, of course the more calculated the risks and research first, the better! I got enough problems without being pulled into a black hole on my lunch break :)

I wonder what the top ten most wasteful spending on projects given hindsight and keeping inflation in mind are of all time?

Here some candidates:

Iraq War
Vietnam
Water World the movie!

They sent that much to Iraq on a C-130, shrink-wrapped, and loaded on pallets, and Paul Bremer can't account for a dime of it...If what these CERN guys are doing puts us a step closer to possessing the absolutely amazing technologies some of our "visitors" appear to be using, I say triple their budget. The first time I saw a UFO, my first thought, after the initial shock subsided, was "I want one!" Unfortunately, knowing how this particular species of violent ape tends to apply new technologies, they'll probably just figure out how to use any miraculous scientific breakthrough they accomplish to build more efficient killing machines.

I think there are far better things the Europeans could have spent their money on, in a practical, mundane sense. But the discoveries made with this thing, and the spin off technologies, could make it all worth it in the long term.
Of course, it's possible it will just answer a few questions for some academics and not affect the other 99.9999999% of humanity. But I am hopeful something useful will come from it eventually.

The the first version of world wide web was created at Cern. So Cern is very important for development! , but we have to way that up against other problems that we have in the world. Would the money not be better spent elsewhere?

who is this "we" you reference?

Personally, as mentioned previously, i think there are much more pressing budget issues america and the world need to address......mainly defense

but then again, what is defense but another way to channel money into the hands of the elite and away from the poor, just like everything else?

"We" have little say in this madhouse grab for wealth and power.......

Without taking that into account, yes...."we" should definitely budget our money towards scientific discovery

I don't know about you, but taking human nature into account....interstellar travel is definitely a worthy endeavor. Things are going to get worse here before they get better, and we're going to need a one-way ticket off this rock sooner or later.

Not only that, but scientific discovery is always a worthy cause. Would you rather just sit stagnant and cease progression towards understanding of the universe? Not i, said the fly...
