The Case for the UFO: Varo Annotated Note

Free episodes:

I've read the PDF version floating around on-line, and I have often wondered what the fuss was.

From what I recall, the notes seem really random, some easily dismissible, and the whole thing just seemed like someone had either gone off their rocker or was trying to come up with a sequel to the terrible UFO Blue Book TV show or something.

Are people still interested in this?

Have you got a link please?

Also I actually rather enjoyed project UFO ;)

could you just quote:

BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found this online:

OTHER SHIPS

Edward Dudgeon served on the U.S.S. Engstrom (DE 50) from June 1943 on. Mr. Dudgeon states that his ship passed the Eldridge (on its way to Norfolk.)

The Cargo Ship S.S. Malay reportedly witnessed the experiment. [14] While doing research into this claim I did not find a SS Malay that would fit the time frame and location. I could only find a Malay Tanker that had records of being Torpedo & Shelled on January 18th of 1942 resulting in 4 deaths. There was a SS Malay, a Norwegian cargo ship in service from 1959 to 1961 and now known as SS Ambria, however this by dates alone could not be the “Malay” that witnessed the experiment in 1943. I did find something interesting during my research though; “Yours Truly Johnny Dollar” was one of the longest-running detective series on radio. It aired on CBS Radio for 15 minutes from 1948 to 1962. On February 10, 1950 the episode was entitled “The SS Malay Trader Ship.” Leads one to wonder if this is where the name of the ship came from that Carl Allen gave to Moore.

[14]“Without A Trace” by Charles Berlitz, Pg 171, Paragraph 2

I wrote and researched the above :) nice to see my site quoted... I put so much time into it (my site has probably the highest quality and quantity of images, articles, Most complete collection of the USS Eldridge’s Logs, original research, and timeline of events that can be found on the Internet.) I have pretty much most books written on the subject including a few copies of "Without A Trace" been on several TV documentaries over the years in several countries, and oddly enough was given the opportunity to purchase the USS Eldridge before it was scrapped.

Has anybody got access to the book “Without A Trace” by Charles Berlitz"?
I think that it must contain more information about the SS Malay. Specifically on Pg 171, Paragraph 2
I expect that whoever wrote the article on Ships of the Experiment - The Philadelphia Experiment From A-Z must have read this book as they have cited it.
As they still may own the book it might be worth contacting them.

Nice detective work, @Han.

Re Without a Trace, that seems to be a Berlitz book concerning disappearances of ships in the Bermuda Triangle. The Berlitz-Moore book on the Philadelphia Experiment is shown and linked below, available at amazon.

When you look at the book, pay attention to the credits at the front and maybe at the rear of the volume, and see if you recognize someone's name. :)

Actually "Without A Trace" was one of the first few books to bring the story of Carl Allen, Morris Jessep and the PX to mass market. Here is some of my book notes on it;

(B) “Without A Trace” by Charles Frambach Berlitz, with collaboration of J. Manson Valentine.

Crew Photo of the S.S. Andrew Furuseth
Lauching of the S.S. Andrew Furuseth
Picture of a Destroyer Escort
Dr. Jessups Death Certificate

I have several versions of "Without a Trace" the one I'm holding now is one of the first runs, and it actually appears on page 211 (a hardcover version may be the page I originally quoted)

It's just a single reference; "The S.S. Malay, another cargo ship that reportedly witnessed the same or subsequent incidences" (The PX)

Here is some of my research and text on the Malay (Updated);

Carl talking about seeing "The Great ARK" (UFO from the Malay)

"On the second of June, 1946 a brightly flaming object was seen in the sky above the Gulf of Alaska. The Great Ark, it was called.. I was on the Malay in the Atlantic... After it landed {9 miles from the Malay} , it discharged a lot of smaller craft... lifeboats... We pulled up four miles and turned parallel with the Ark, and that's when it exploded. It was a small nuclear explosion, but there was no harmful fallout" - Carl M. Allen (1991)[14]

“{In May or June of 1947 The SS Maylay} was nearly capsized by a kilotomic explosion... it is the only ship to have survived the explosion of a UFO... I ought to know, I was a crew member, steering the ship at the time.” - Carl M. Allen[15]

Notice here the story is close to the one reported by Moore but we now can look at it as maybe it was the Malay after all. Further we can assume this is also the same "Cargo Ship S.S. Malay" that reportedly witnessed the experiment.[16]

Carl said he witnessed a UFO incident in May or June of 1947 in some interviews; 1946 in others. He only served on the SS Malay from May 8th, 1946 to June 22nd, 1946. This timeframe does fit with some of his statements. While doing research into the ship I did find a “SS MalayTanker ship (named as such form 1933~1948) that had records of being Torpedo & Shelled on January 18th of 1942 resulting in five deaths (29 survivors.)

There was also another SS Malay, a Norwegian cargo ship in service from 1959 to 1961 and now known as SS Ambria, however this by dates alone could not be the “Malay” that witnessed the experiment in 1943, or the UFO incident in 1946/7. I did find something interesting during my research though; “Yours Truly Johnny Dollar” was one of the longest-running detective series on radio. It aired on CBS Radio for 15 minutes from 1948 to 1962. On February 10, 1950 the episode was entitled “The SS Malay Trader Ship.”

The SS Malay Steam tanker (8,206 tons) was originally built in June of 1921 as the “Swiftwind.” for Boat Owning & Operating Co (C.D. Mallory & Co Inc), Wilmington DE. In 1933 it was renamed Malay. In 1941 it was sold to Marine Transport Line, Wilmington, Del. In 1948 sold and renamed Loideste for Aegean Shipping Co (Embiricos), London. In 1950 sold Liberia renamed Astra, 1951 sold to Greece and renamed Troy for Alexander S. Onassis., finally in August 1955 the ship was scrapped in Hamburg. I have yet to locate any crew member lists, these names come from 1942 which is several years before Carl Allen would board he ship;

    • Dodge, John M., Merchant Marine, Master of the Malay
    • Bennett Heblack, First Officer
    • Ashby, Clifford Elwood, Merchant Marine Age 23, Fireman/Wiper
    • Da Rosa, Manuel, Merchant Marine, Age 48, Chief Cook
    • Hay, Adam James, Merchant Marine Age 46, Cook
    • Mahmut, Arif, Merchant Marine, Fireman
    • Miller, William Lewis, Merchant Marine, Utility
    • Michael Zack
    • Robert Nixon
    • Phil Cauthorne
    • Cliff Wilbraham
One last thing Carl says "no harmful fallout" from the UFO Exploding, however I need to find the reference but I do remember him saying "after my hair fell out in clumps" somewhere.. which again not the same story.

Hope the above is interesting.

Funny was going though some of my source materials and noticed out of the two original massive "Damage Control Manuals" used on ships in the 1940's (they measure 11"x17") one is from the DE-335 the other DE-168 One of the ships Carl Allen talks about;

“Einstein was on a test ship, the DE-168. I was on the SS Furuseth. We were in a military convoy with many, many ships. I was on the bow….The forcefield was under my nose, you might say – under my chest and neck. It had spread out from the target ship (the DE-173).” – Carl Allen

Was thinking about this again the other day, at how odd things seem to happen when I am feeling I found all there is to find.. from the rare newspaper articles I was recently able to find, to discovering I had one of the manuals from one of the ships Carl talks about. Strange things occur here and there that seem to help hold me to the path.

Heh. That hadn't registered with me yet. That is interesting. I figured the red was Allen's original comments, but was focused on deciphering the handwriting. It has been a long time, but I've seen images of some of the original notations and it seems the handwriting was similar. I could be way off though. Maybe it was equally legible or something. If I still have a book with any of that in it, the thing is buried in storage. I don't recall where Gene got that copy. Curious. Now I have to do an image search!

Here is some samples are Carl Allen's Hand Writing that may help;
