Ah, back in the 90s I did a lot of shortwave listening and hosteling and had the pleasure of visiting arthur cushen shortly b4 he passed on in '97. He lived in invercargill and was a blind ham radio operator. Apparently the wx there is relatively moderate in relation to most s. island spots? The ocean was pretty gnarely though. When I was there the southern ocean was pretty fierce and that was even with stewart island running interference

Nice bit of NZ.. I live in Christchurch so I am a fair bit north.

The straight between the mainland and stewart island can be a bit gnarly for sure having crossed it a few times .. the water depth is only 30 meters and you get the Tasman current running into the southern ocean current there so it gets a bit rough.
