What if a UFO Landed and Nobody Came?
By Gene Steinberg
The pop culture concept of the landing of an extraterrestrial craft envisions a major event. Consider the image from the classic sci-fi film, “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” A flying saucer lands in a park, and the military is quickly dispatched to check it out. In “Independence Day,” large spaceships hover above major cities around the world.
In the first case, a humanoid wearing a silvery uniform leaves the spaceship and takes off his helmet to reveal a human face. But he’s shot by a frightened soldier when he casually removes something from his outfit. The alien, Klaatu, has come to Earth to deliver an invitation and a warning to us. Either get our acts together and give up nuclear weapons and other instruments of war, or ET will take us out.
For “Independence Day,” the aliens are hostile. When cities around the world, including Washington, D.C., are destroyed, it marks the beginning of an invasion. They want to take us out, and plunder our resources before moving on to another planet and doing it all over again.
Over the years, UFO contactees and experiencers have reported repeated encounters with otherworldly beings that appear to be friendly. As with Klaatu, we are warned of the follies of war, but the Space Brothers do not attempt to enforce their wishes. We just have to listen, I suppose.
Or they just don’t know much about our civilization and apparently expect a bunch of virtually unknown experiencers to be taken seriously. Well except by a few people who become followers.
As this week’s episode of The Paracast was being put together, I learned of the latest efforts to push for UFO disclosure. This time, it was a promotional piece for “UFOs/UAP Global Disclosure Day,” scheduled for October 20, 2024. In other words, the news arrived too late for us to give it any publicity. But the event offered two dozen speakers, most of whom are well known in the field.
All well and good. If the governments of Earth are really keeping the truth about UFOs a secret, we should find a way to persuade them to let us in on it. That, of course, assumes the visitors aren’t hostile and either mean us well or just don’t care.
If it became known that we might be invaded some day, the authorities would no doubt keep the bad news under wraps as long as possible. At least until or if we find a way to fight back. But if the time comes for Earth to be taken out, it may be too late to do anything about it if there’s no defense.
On the other hand, since UFOs have been here for so many years, I’ll assume that, if they are beings from other planets, they don’t mean us harm. Even where people have been injured, as in the Cash-Landrum and Randlesham Forest encounters in 1980, it may have not been a deliberate act. Some spacecraft may emit radiation that may be harmful to humans.
But not always. Even then, where people have been injured, maybe it’s because they came too close to a test aircraft, not an offworld vehicle.
In all this, once again, I’m making assumptions, that UFOs are physical craft from other planets, other dimensions or perhaps even another time. Being advanced, their presence may strain our boundaries of reality, but they are nonetheless real, just far more advanced than primitive Earthlings can even understand.
If they are spaceships, though, would the day come when they decide to reveal themselves with one or more public landings? Short of that, would world leaders eventually decide to reveal that truth?
If the revelation comes by public pronouncement — and the presence of a spaceship isn’t involved — the public’s reaction may be far less than we’d expect. Once the statement is released, it will make headlines around the world.
But if there’s no real follow-up, such as actually showing a captured craft, or a public exhibition by our visitors, what then?
As you know, news these days is transitory. Even the war between Ukraine and Russia — tragic as it is — doesn’t always earn coverage. There is just too much going on when it comes to current events, and the news media — at least in the U.S. — is not good at handling follow-up stories.
At the same time, except for actual UFO buffs, most people will lose interest very quickly. We have been brought up in a sci-fi world, where Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate SG-1, Farscape and loads of other productions have made most ET races warm and fuzzy. Even the Klingons started out as villains, but eventually become friendly, sort of.
So it’s very likely that the revelation of ET’s presence will earn a collective yawn from most people. At least if it doesn’t directly impact their daily lives.
I sometimes think of this possible result: “What if the existence of ET was revealed and nobody came?”
A public landing will definitely achieve far more and far more intense coverage, well at least as long as the spaceship or spaceships remain. If they don’t just fly off.
If they do leave, yes there will be a fair amount of coverage, and speculation about their intentions, assuming they don’t open public lines of communication. But how long will that last?
“So ET is here. So what?”
Again if there is no impact to our society, no potential threat to national security, it won’t be that important to most people. Yes, even though the confirmed presence of intelligent beings from other planets should be one of the most important events in human history, our short attention span will eventually move the story to the back pages of newspapers, and just an occasional feature on radio and TV.
Again, this is all based on an unproven assumption, that UFOs are spaceships. If they are time travelers, there are possibilities that might be of concern, such as potential damage to the timestream.
But if they represent an unknown, unknowable force, perhaps one already in control of our destinies, it may just be too difficult to consider. So out of sight, out of mind.
