If you're looking for something combat-grade and don't want to deal with the high price of .223's, 7.62's, etc., the Suomi M31, which spits readily available 9mm's is an excellent choice and you can get a new one for under 600 bucks.
You may have to do some digging, but they are around.Can you actually get one of those these days? It looks like they're pretty scarce. I managed to get a Bushmaster AR-15 (.223) but everyone's on back order for those as well. Of course, the price is up, too.
