I was saying boo-urns
I use to take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo for years and have always been a fan of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). I don't think this has ever really been talked about here. Any martial artists here? Any MMA/UFC fans here? Getting ready to watch UFC 115 shortly. :D

I myself took 'Judo' classes when I was 12, ages ago.

Concerning MMA, beating someone to a pulp when both combatants know the consequences and rules ?

I'm all for it :)

Love all of it. I started tae kwon do in 1975 after meeting a Korean master who had just arrived in Minnesota. I train once a month with him to this day. I have had my own studio for 18 years now, I teach every Monday and Thursday night. MMA/UFC is brutal... Those guys are incredibly talented. I am a huge fan of Fedor Emelianenko.

Yep, my favorite sport to watch. I'm downloading UFC 115 right now. Very expensive sport to watch. The UFC wants several hundred dollars to get a seat to one of their shows and the PPV is $60-$70 or something like that. But the internet makes it possible for non-rich people like me to watch it. :)

Channelsurfing.net and Atdhe.net FTW!

:D

Imagine that... an injury... you guys are animals.

BTW- I hope Carwin rips Lesnars head off and poops down his neck.

MMA is a bunch of bloodthirsty thugs that says a lot about where we are as a society today. Give me the sweet science of boxing anyday, even with all of its flaws.

LMAO!!!! You know squat about MMA! You are out of your league here Paul...

With all due respect, I would gladly give you some sweet science of boxing. ;)

How about we post the number of boxing deaths to the number of MMA deaths to see which is more bloodthirsty? I like boxing as well, but that was about as ignorant as it gets to take that view on MMA. The majority of successful MMA fighters are intelligent people and often have college degrees as the primary base of MMA is freestyle wrestling. So boxers off the streets are not thugs, but guys with bachelors are thugs?

I would say your reply shows how uninformed society is on the sport and the athletes of MMA, Paul.

I'm sorry, but MMA is one step removed from the gladitorial pits of ancient Rome.

MMA doesn't allow the bouts to drag on for so long that people end up with brain damage. Get dazed just once and it's over as opposed to boxing where you can get knocked out over and over again so long as you regain consciousness within 10 seconds.

I find the thug comment to be a little odd. On any given night at a bar, barbecue, or party you can see a guy get punched in the head, the staple of boxing. I personally have never seen an armbar or triangle outside of a MMA match.

MMA is the greatest contact sport in the world and boxing is on its way out. :)

I'd say early UFC was a dangerous sport, like they were trying to create a Bloodsport (My favourite JCVD movie). It's much better now and I find it quite entertaining when I catch it. I really enjoyed the one season of Ultimate Fighter that I watched. It was the one with both Matts - they were both irritating.

ANY sport can be dangerous. In the town I teach Tae Kwon Do there are far more injuries in the High School Football and Baseball programs. I have had one minor injury in my class in 18 years, and that was from a kid horsing around before class and he fell down and sprained his arm. This is in a class where sparring, leveraged restraints and submission type hold are practiced every class. I think that is a pretty good record.

People like Paul do not understand the level of training and dedication theses MMA athletes go through. He would probably never last one training session. Showing someone like him the science involved in a few submission holds would be a pleasure. It reminds me of the last time I taught a Law enforcement self defense class. These big tough cops came in thinking that this long haired skinny instructor was not going to show them much. WRONG! Most of them found out they knew very little about restraining a perp, knife defense, gun retention, take downs and even diffusing a bad situation with a calm voice and non aggressive posturing. It was quite fun putting a few of them in a head lock, and within 7 seconds watching their eyes roll back in their head and going limp in my arms.

MMA is a mixture of many disciplines (including boxing) ALL of which should be mastered before stepping in the ring. There is far more "sweet science" in MMA than Boxing alone.

When I play Street Fighter, I know how to do a dragon punch! :)

I watched Penn and Teller's Bullshit this week and they talked about cheer leading - apparently it has the most injuries out of any high school activity. I say activity because they do no consider it a sport, even though it's less about cheering and more about gymnastics these days. It was a far more interesting episode than I thought it would be.

MMA is a decent;y safe sport because most of the pros know what's at stake.

I would definitely classify Competition Cheerleading as a gymnastics sport. Speaking of gymnastics, a videographer friend of mine was in this morning. He has a black and very swollen eye from a little gymnasts running into his camera as he was shooting an event.

Paul - it is gladiatorial not gladitorial. Just sayin... ;)

Wow..........

The sad thing is I have directed a lot of professional MMA fighters to this site as a few of them have interest in the topic. I would bet they disagree that they are savage monsters from Rome.

I watched UFC a couple of times on a English sports TV channel. It is ok to watch i tend get bored watching it though. I more of a boxing fan.
Ireland has had some great sporting moments over the years with or professional boxers winning title fights. So we watch sports that we do well in lol
