The thing about the spin on that article is that while the superficial facts may be true, other sources have determined that the outbreak in Wuhan was covered up in China, so by the time the WHO was informed on Dec. 31, 2019, the outbreak had been underway for more than a month. The question then becomes the level of responsibility that the WHO leadership has for gathering the correct information.

Is "China told me so, therefore it must be true." good enough?

This can get complicated. Can it be proven that the WHO leadership knew about the outbreak before December 31, 2020? I don't know the answer to that question ( yet ). However the evidence does seem reasonable enough to conclude that Chinese authorities knew about it well before December 31, yet the WHO praised China for its transparency, which is now known to be false.

That also begs the question of how the WHO knows that China was being transparent? At present it doesn't seem to have the independence it needs to effectively monitor emerging diseases. It depends on what information scientists can provide, and they are largely under the purview of some bureaucracy that acts as a filter, compounded by the WHO's own bureaucracy.

IMO the WHO doesn't need to be defunded, it needs to be restructured in a way that allows it to do the job it's supposed to do. If that fails, then whatever is left that it can do should still be funded, but its role as a "World Health Organization" can only be considered meaningful if all nations in the "World" sign onto an agreement that gives the WHO independence from political and military interference in their work.

Don't forget that people from the U.S. CDC were on there, so they knew what was going on and they reported back to their bosses.

But Trump played his off-key fiddle.

The time will come to look over how things were done and find ways to make it all work better. Now is not the time. Obviously threats to defund by schoolyard bullies don't have fix problems. If he wants to defund the people who screwed up, he should start with himself.

I completely agree with you there, and was going to mention it, but the article was with respect to the WHO. Now that you've brought the CDC into the picture, I would like to know exactly when they were informed about the outbreak in Wuhan, and who informed them. There have been suggestions that US Intelligence knew about the outbreak in China well before China's official disclosure. How true is that? Was the CDC informed by those Intelligence souces ( if in fact there were any ).
