Nothing he did would have prevented it from happening, but if he did his job, we wouldn't have over 46,000 people dead in the US as the result of the pandemic, as of the morning of April 22, 2020.

People would have died, but Trump could have acted in accordance with what his own people, including CDC, told him. Every single death beyond what it could have been is on him and the jerks who follow the Pied Piper of the Oval Office.

No, testing is not perfect. It wasn't perfect when he said it was last month, and the biggest delay in getting the economy restored is Trump's refusal to act promptly to use the powers he has to step up testing.

Politically, Trump's rival was Hillary, who tried for years to champion a robust national healthcare system. Regardless of whatever anyone else thinks of her ( especially the anti-Hillary smear campaigners who deserve no serious attention ), had her healthcare plans been given support from the get-go, the USA would have unquestionably been in a far better position to handle this crisis. I tend to have the same sentiments had she been President.

I also find it a convenient coincidence that America's biggest strategic weakness is its inability to defend against bio-weapons, and that a lot of propaganda went into making sure the candidate who would have changed that never made it to office. But perhaps now is a time for everyone to set aside political discontent, rally behind what strength we do have, defeat this common enemy, and deal with the politics later.

I think the current situation will actually improve the support for a national health care system.

Hillary never figured out how to give a campaign speech, and her people failed to recognize how Trump's lies appealed to the middle class that had been left behind.

Wasn't there evidence of foreign electronic interference with her campaign too though?

Russia wasn't the only offender, but they specifically, under orders from Putin, wanted Trump to win. He admitted to that preference at that infamous Helsinki press conference.

Maybe the real reason for the major lockdown is the fear that COVID-19 would ignite an all-out war with China, and things would get real messy.
