If anyone is wondering why this is bumped, I saw it while searching though Gils opd posts to get a hint at who the mystery guest who gets reamed next week is.

The thing that bugs me most is that many people still equate "UFO" with "alien space craft", and I think that has much to do with any secrecy that may be seen from NASA when it comes to crew members seeing things out there.

I think that most of the folks in charge at NASA through the years understand that, while it's sad to say, most of the public is not educated enough to make the distinction between the two. Like it or not, if you stop the average person on the street and say UFO, they automatically make the jump to Marvin the Martian.

Space crews encounter objects constantly and have been since the earliest Earth orbital missions, IMO they are simply being prudent scientists by not creating hysteria over every little piece of space debris that happens to fly by a video camera, a technology which I'm sure David will well tell you is easily open to capturing things that aren't what they appear on film, tape, HDD, flash memory, or whatever media you happen to be using at the time.

Just my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth. :)

That law has been constantly misrepresented by people determined to manufacture conspiracies.
It is transparently intended to protect Earth from biological contamination. At the time of the Moon landings it was known that the Moon was almost certainly as dead as it is, but precautions had to be taken against even the remotest possibility that microorganisms could be brought back on returning spacecraft - precautions which would be essential if manned Mars missions were to eventuate (since we still can't answer the question definitively with regard to Mars.
I read about that law as a child and even then its intent was self-evident.

So if anyone feels the urge to imagine it's meant to stop you from chatting with the aliens, just go and have a lie down until you feel better.

This sort of thing is related to the sensationlist claims that exploded in the nineties: after the UFO mystery has defied analysis or resolution for so many decades people are susceptible to willing evidence into existence, and are tempted to clutch at straws.
I remember when people decided to imagine that part of John Glenn's appearance on Frasier was him going rogue to disclose the "truth" under the cover of fiction, when it was clearly part of the script as you would expect.

It just makes us look ridiculous.
