I live in Texas. The question here would be "who does not own at least one firearm?" Walking alleyways in Somalia would probably be safer than breaking into a house around here at 3:00 a.m.

Here in Minnesota it is a lot like Texas. Almost every house has guns... And lots of them.

I live in NY so obtaining a gun is not easy and expensive. I do think a gun is everyone's right to own (every sane person that is) and should be accessible, especially if you live in a rural area. The founding fathers knew what they were doing with the second amendment. "A free people ought not only be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government." - GW

Now have I ever fired a gun? Ohh yeaah... and many of them many times over. In fact, I fire a gun at least twice year at a range.

I can say that I hate guns because they are dangerous and freakin expensive.
I have had my two guns ($75 combined original cost) sitting around not being used since 1979 and not once have they shot me or anyone. On the other hand, I have a 500 ct box of letter sized manila envelopes ($100) that have cut me pretty good on numerous occasions. I can say I HATE envelopes because they are dangerous and freakin expensive. I LOVE guns because I grew up with them and like envelopes they are perfectly safe unless you are not careful.

Growing up in rural Minnesota you got your first gun usually around 10-12 yrs of age. If you didn't have one you might be considered odd.

I wouldn't say anyone here not owning a gun would have been regarded as eccentric. I knew of a small town sheriff, as a child who did his job without having to wear a sidearm, much like Andy of Mayberry. How times have changed !

I would go on the occasional dove hunt with my family when much younger. We never really cared for the locally popular sport of deer hunting with high powered rifles. IMO, it's much like sitting in a plywood box for hours awaiting an opportunity to shoot one's own livestock as they come in to feed. But--deer tend to be overpopulated in certain areas, and nature's methods of thinning herds is usually more cruel than a quick kill with a rifle. I take a personally dim view of bow hunting in which the animal is frequently maimed and then tracked to exhaustion. I suppose lines of compassion are not always clear. I sometimes wonder whether if youngsters could actually witness the taking of animal life, they might be less enamored with sanitized virtual violence in video games. And they would understand at the gut level that meat comes through, and not from the local grocery. But, who knows.

Times can change for the better. Certain deer hunters used to strap their bloody kill across the hoods of their cars and drive it around for miles, presumably to the rendering house. I suspect much of this was a display of machismo hunting prowess. Thankfully, this practice has long since vanished.

I own a sig and a non lethal shot gun looking bean bag shooter ( which causes a world of pain), I do believe guns are very important, its just those few who need to abuse this who will ruin the image, truthfully i fear knives more than guns.

I think it's easier to get a nuclear weapon than a gun license in New Jersey. You get fingerprinted and a big sign is painted on your back. Now if someone just gave me a gun as a present...

I grew up in free'er times, i had a right collection, all shotguns and air-rifles, by my mid-20s, i was 'bang' into my field sports then, right upto my mid/late 30s and i sold the last 2 good quality [browning & barretta] shotguns i owned, once they introduced fire-arms certificate for ALL guns, even air-rifles, that was me done, plus the dog was old, and i didnt have the time or interest in training another one, red tape, and random gun cabinet inspections, were another reason, i didnt want a copper turning up, and wanting in un-announced, you still went to jail then here for just the smell of a joint, and a roach in an ashtray.

I missed my shooting tho, for a good while, there's a big difference between losing interest, with all the gear still there, and being able to pick the sport back up, in a limited way, dogless even, than starting from scratch again.

My biggest concern is for insure our firearm is used in a responsible manner. Rikki and I have taken a firearms safely course. The pistol is kept in a locked box. The bullet in a separate locked mini safe. Further the pistol has a barrel lock and a trigger lock

Vesve you or Rikki could be dead by the time you load that pistol.

With 4 kids in the house I feel the sucuity is nesserey any suggestions will be welcome

All you need to do now is put the double locked gun, thats in its locked box, in a locked safe, i would leave the bullets with a neighbour, ya can never be too careful.
