I live in Texas. The question here would be "who does not own at least one firearm?"
I remember reading some years ago that Texas led the nation in per capita gun ownership. It stated that there were seven guns in TX for every Texan. BION, I did read that statistic somewhere.

I'll rephrase. New guns are freakin expensive. Guns are by their very nature are bloody dangerous, just like chainsaws or farm tractors.
So is a bicycle, bathtub, stove, dog, steps, ice, automobile, etc etc..

I hope to buy a new Springfield Armory 45 compact soon. Yes it is expensive.

Not hard to believe. Many Texans have an affinity for firearms that goes a little beyond the need for hunting or self-protection. I suppose it's mostly harmless. Except in cases of gang affiliation (a relatively new phenomenon) or the simmering cauldron of a nut case on the verge of making headlines. I think firearms are mostly used responsibly by those who stock their gun safes as a kind of hobby in itself. I would much rather spend whatever spare cash I might have on any number of other indulgences.

Thinking back--In my youth, it was also not uncommon for guys to drive around town with a hunting rifle proudly displayed on a gun rack in the back of their pickup cabs. Yes--we are not many generations removed from the mythological Wild West. For the most part it was not so much wild as quietly gritty.

If I had a gun- having two kids myself, I think I would train them in gun safety. I know one thing for sure, kids can figure out how to get into anything. Like inmates, they have the time and smarts to look for weak spots in any security systems. Not to mention that curiosity alone can drive many kids. I suppose better to train them at a young age?

Aye, righto 10, then by his mid teens he should be proficient enough to take out half his class-mates.

oopsy, im getting controversial.

Why would he do that just because he learned how to properly handle a firearm? Did you start stabbing class mates after learning how to use a knife and fork? Your statement is absurd.

I suppose better to train them at a young age?

Absolutely. It's like teaching kids not to drink cleaning products, or not to stick things in electrical outlets.

Making children safe around guns is made difficult by the media children are subjected to. Guns are nothing more than simple machines that do one particular thing, but like sex, the media makes them seem like something powerful, mysteriously frightening, and super-important, when they in fact are not.

The worst sex addicts I ever saw were Penetecostal preachers' daughters. Those girls were taught that sex is soooo powerful, mysterious, and super important that a person can endanger their very soul by playing with it!

I taught my daughters that sex was something dogs do in the front yard anytime they want, and so can you. Nothing mysterious about it. I can't, and won't stop you. You are smart enough to know better. My wife's doctor informed my wife that our daughters stayed virgins until they were married.

Same with guns. Kids should see them all the time. Kids should be shown exactly what they do to animals. Kids should see first-hand, as soon as they can comprehend, how very dangerous guns are.

Like the preacher's daughter, hiding guns from kids ensures they will try their best to play with them unsupervised at the first opportunity.

Whats that about 20 people killed by kids on school premises this year alone, good job they closed july/august.
Bet they werent thinking this is absured just as the kid pulled the trigger on them.

In each instance a human pulled the trigger. The gun did not shoot itself. If you then look at the human closer I bet you find prescription drugs involved in many of those events.
I have never seen a gun jump up and shoot someone. Ever.

You will never see a kid with no access to a gun, shoot someone either.

Yall should share the same dream, that your police can one day do their job un-armed, people need screened before being issued a certificate for a hunting weapon.

Personal firearms for protection is just macho bollox, dis-arm criminals, heavy jail terms for possession, heavy estrictions on sales, dis-arm the nation, and de-militerise your police, everybody lives happily ever after, if yu want a gun, get screened, and get a liscence..

Teaching kids to use fire-arms is ludicrous, how can any sane person not see that, theres a reason why kids cannot consume alcohol and vote until they are 21, or drive a car until they pass numerous tests, and even then they are restricted.

Tell me who in their right mind would give hormonal teenagers access to fire-arms.

That list was one school year in the U.S. Madness, the whole situation. No parent thinks their kid will be that kid who sneaks a gun to class. After, it's the whole "how could this have happened?" My guess is, there is not a shooter on that list whose parent(s) don't regret leaving access to that weapon. Except in the rare case when a kid obtains one outside the home.

Well theres rural enviroments, and some kids grow up in them, nothing wrong with hunting, or introducing a kid who wants to hunt, to hunting, but theres learning stages, mostly they just tag along, and learn, and its a world away from city kids and weapons.
