I would routinely kill those posts because they contain too many links, but I'd rather the gentle reader worry why Charlie Prime has so much time on his hands, and how he chooses to waste it.

Well back to the game in progress.

Lookee--set the slippery issue of climate change aside for a minute and peruse pics of planet earth taken from space. It's of limited size and maybe it ain't so big after all. Take the time to hunt down a graph of human population growth over the last 100 years and project it outward. Factor in the demands of ever larger scale technology on this earth.

Barring some cataclysmic decline in human population such as plague or nuclear war--always a possibility-- current trends cannot continue. Climate change is complex. Overpopulation and limitation of resources is a no-brainer.

Quite the reverse - you may be unaware but you are talking to some scientists - well acquainted with the scientific method.

Suggest you actually read some of the links, especially the ones from the Ring of Fire Radio Show. Also, on your own - you need to start reading the reports and literature first hand - instead of hearing the spins and going with them as 'facts'. JMO.

The problem is that the pro-AGW camp's entire theory is based on the notion that CO2 is the driving force behind climate change. It's not. It never was in the past. But for some reason we are now supposed to believe that despite 4 billion years of earth's climate, that now, all of a sudden CO2 magically becomes the driving force. The current level of CO2 in the atmosphere is not this huge amount that you've been led to believe. The current level is .054%. There have been periods of earth's history where there was 10x the CO2 level we have today with no run-a-way global warming.

I've also stated this at least once now. Within 600-800 million years the earth will go through the REAL global warming. By that time the Sun's energy output would have increased to where it will destroy the carbon cycle. This means that CO2 levels in the air will drop to the point where plants can no longer photosynthesize. All multi-cellular life will go extinct. And the extinction will be because there is not enough CO2 in the air.

The truth of the matter is that earth's climate is far bigger than this:

Man produces CO2, CO2 causes global warming, therefore the earth is going to heat up and all manner of really bad things are going to happen.

Nope. Sorry. The earth's climate is not this simple. CO2 is a greenhouse gas but it's among the weakest of greenhouse gases and there are processes that balance it out. For example, increase CO2 causes more plant growth which then remove more CO2 from the air. This is just one example of the balancing mechanisms. Study the carbon cycle. The earth is a self-regulating system.

I sense a lot of you still believe in that hockey stick graph even though it was exposed and debunked. The people who created it rigged it so no matter what variables you typed in you always got the same result. And this brings me to the major issue....charts, graphs, models, computer models.....they may look professional and convincing but you always, always, need to be aware they are always based on human honesty and accuracy. If the person who made them makes a mistake they are not accurate. If the person who made this is dishonest, which many have been exposed as being, and enters in knowingly wrong values then they are completely false. Just like with the hockey stick graph. There's really no reason how it could have been just an honest mistake. It had to be deliberately designed to fool people. And that's the problem we face. No matter how many people are exposed you people still believe the lies. And why are some scientists hoaxing evidence to "prove" AGW? They are doing it to get their share of the billion dollar industry funded by the U.S. government. You too would fake and fudge anything to make a 6 figure salary if not more. You people want to sit there and accuse the Oil companies of financially backing the opposition. However, even if that was true it is no competition to the billions the U.S. government is giving ONLY to scientists who are pro-AGW. The U.S. government isn't even pretending not to be biased in their dealing out of grant money.

I am because I learned the Scientific Method in the 6th grade, at a public school no less.

It's a method for distinguishing science from science fraud like the current climate change fraud.

You should check it out.

Yes. I know. I too was trained at an early age to use critical thinking skills. However, most of the public remains ignorant of how since the AIDS epidemic the U.S. government has acted to hijack science and even dictate what is and what isn't reality. So the majority of the public is unaware the most of what they read in support of AGW is mere governmental propaganda.

Overpopulation is a myth. It actually can be traced as an idea to Ancient Greece where elite argued that too many people were "pressing down" upon Gaia (the earth goddess). In reality it was the fear that the "unwashed masses" would threaten the resources of the elite. Fast forward to the later 1700s and a man named Thomas Malthus claimed that overpopulation would cause a world-wide food shortage. He even suggested the human race needed to be culled. Malthus was dead wrong and anyone who continues to suggest that overpopulation is a problem today are either horribly ignorant or are once again arguing the elite's fear that the "unwashed masses" pose a threat to resources they have claimed for themselves. I seriously doubt that anyone reading this thread is truly an elite and thus should not be pretending to be one by arguing for the reality of overpopulation. Therefore I'm forced to conclude the problem is ignorance.

Ok, obviously you haven't completely comprehended the Soylent Yellow K.D. products being sold alongside Soylent Green and Red footstuffs, all replete with such nutritious and vital ingredients such as "artificial flavour," "tartrazine" & "yellow colour #5."

I still think that supporting the planet and its life forms is priority one; polluting less is right alongside that and then recognizing that your notions of "science" have been coloured by the corporate godhood would help some to get a grip on reality, and please just stop visiting all those conspiracist sites where we haven't landed on the moon, which also happens to be made of cheese. Again, climate science right now is in debate and so citing a billion year plus history of the climate is an anomalous discussion at best.

Who promotes the hate and promotes luxury - start with that voice and see where climate change denial originates - it sure ain't in any kingdom you and I inhabit.

AGW has nothing to do with pollution. I'm amazed how so many people here keep tossing this out. Pro-AGW people only speak about CO2. That's it. So stop equating things.

You completely discredit yourself by bringing up the moon landing conspiracy.

The history of earth's climate is crucial to understanding it's future. Your claim that we need to ignore the earth's climate of the past serves only to cover up the glaring hole in your beloved theory. CO2 was never the driving force behind climate at any time in earth's past. So how the hell did it magically become so in the past few decades? It wasn't then and it isn't now and never will be.

Charlie, WTF? $10,000 bet? Black Hawk Down? Brothels struggle? Cambodian sex trade?
Owls turn brown? OWLS TURN BROWN?
Why link so much crap dude?

Just list a few pro climate change websites, an equal number of anti-climate change sites, and let people make up their own minds.
You won't get any traction one way or the other posting silly stuff like that.

He's proving the point that the pro-AGW camp are nothing but fear mongers hashing out fear porn and scare tactics. Also, every one of those studies was made by a scientist who is getting the grant money from the U.S. government (or their country's government). The U.S. government and other governments do not fund scientists who oppose AGW. To get the money you have to be be a believer or at least a good liar.

So let him do it in a non-adolescent way.
I personally have every confidence the earth is about to cook in a big way. Humans have dumped too many millions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere for there NOT to be some kind of climate change.
Just because the poles are melting, glaciers are melting, Greenland's ice cap is melting, and every year the average temp keeps going up I guess could mean climate change isn't for real.
But I'm not betting on it.

See? A non-screaming post. What difference will this post(s) make anyway?....Nada.

You cant possibly equate ideas from ancient greece to todays situation, no one is suggesting the problem is too many ppl pressing down on gaia, what an absurd correlation to try and draw.

The world’s population had been growing by about 100 million every century since 1500 and was at around 700 million shortly before Malthus’ birth in 1766. While Malthus recognised that the population had slowly been increasing, he was not in a position to anticipate three major changes to the amount of food available that occurred shortly after he made his predictions

Does this mean that Malthus will always be wrong?
Unfortunately, just because Malthus was wrong 200 years ago it does not mean that his theories will always be wrong. The three main drivers of agricultural growth are stalling and many of them are one offs, never to be repeated again.

Huge irrigation schemes in the US, China, India and other parts of the world are also under threat as much of the water comes from underground aquifers. These aquifers get replenished over thousands of years and current levels of extraction significantly exceed the replenishment rate (see article). Many countries rely on glacial melt to feed their river systems and monsoon rains to water their crops. Changes in climate are already affecting weather patterns, which is making these natural watering systems less reliable.
Finally, as countries get richer, their diets improve and people want to eat more protein. Growing crops like alfalfa, soya beans and maize for animal feed reduces the food available for direct human consumption, which is far more efficient. Growing corn for biofuels will clearly have to stop.
This is a bleak assessment of food availability: land availability is declining, not increasing, mechanisation is producing diminishing returns, yield improvements due to genetically modified crops are lower than hoped for and are likely to be offset by declining soil quality and water availability. Malthus would be nodding his head in sad agreement: famines are more likely than food abundance.

Malthus was wrong. Is he still wrong? - History Future Now

We only have to look at countries with runaway population growth to see a direct correlation between over large populations and environmental damage.

The Ganges River Pollution is now at such a high level that the amount of toxins, chemicals and other dangerous bacteria found in the river are now almost 3000 times over the limit suggested by the WHO as 'safe'.The river directly and indirectly affects the largest population of any river in the world with over more than 420 million people who rely on it for food, water, bathing and agriculture.

More than 2 percent of China’s arable land, or an area the size of Belgium, is too polluted to grow crops, the government said, offering new evidence of the environmental cost associated with 30 years of breakneck growth.

China's water and air quality has long been sacrificed by the government to China's thirst for industrial growth in recent decades. Even the government releases grim statistics: 64% of groundwater in 118 Chinese cities is "severely polluted," state news agency Xinhua reports.

But this earthly paradise is disappearing fast. The proliferation of factories, farms, and cities—all products of China's spectacular economic boom is sucking the Yellow River dry. What water remains is being poisoned. From the canal bank, Shen points to another surreal flash of color: blood-red chemical waste gushing from a drainage pipe, turning the water a garish purple. This canal, which empties into the Yellow River, once teemed with fish and turtles, he says. Now its water is too toxic to use even for irrigation; two of Shen's goats died within hours of drinking from the canal.

Those who do not learn from historys mistakes are doomed to repeat them, do you want to live in a world like this ?

These examples are real not myths, your response is akin to a child sticking its fingers in its ears and chanting la la la to avoid the awful truth. these examples are real not myth. they are direct measurable correlations of the effects on the environment of runaway population growth.

Overpopulation deniers often cite the texas example, all the people on earth could fit into texas. But thats a simplistic and silly thing to say. Overpopulation is not about space, there is indeed plenty of room left on earth. Its about resources. in particular gobbling up renewable resources faster than they can be renewed. when we do that we are stealing from the future. Yes you could squeeze everyone into texas, but that same land mass could not then provide the food and water for 7, soon to be 9 billion people let alone all the other resources like energy and steel and timber for them.
Its not about parking space for humanitys collective arses, its about the resources they need

An international team of microbiologists led by Klaus Nüsslein of the University of Massachusetts Amherst has found that a troubling net loss in diversity among the microbial organisms responsible for a functioning ecosystem is accompanying deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.

Biologist and first author Jorge Rodrigues of the University of Texas at Arlington adds, "We have known for a long time that conversion of rainforest land in the Amazon for agriculture results in a loss of biodiversity in plants and animals. Now we know that microbial communities which are so important to the ecosystem also suffer significant losses."

Cattle ranching is the leading cause of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. In Brazil, this has been the case since at least the 1970s: government figures attributed 38 percent of deforestation from 1966-1975 to large-scale cattle ranching. Today the figure in Brazil is closer to 70 percent. Most of the beef is destined for urban markets, whereas leather and other cattle products are primarily for export markets.

And because the soil has adapted over millenia to rainforst growth, its only good for a year or two at most as pasture, so they simply slash and burn more rainforest once the land is barren and move on.

Not myth, measurable reality.

Four questions: First, if you are a farmer, and the bulk of all of the water that you need for your crops comes from an underground aquifer, what will happen to your crops when there is no more water left in the aquifer? Second question, what happen to food production if you are a country when 30% of all of your water for irrigation comes from underground aquifers? Third question, what happens to global food prices if two other major food producing areas also rely on underground aquifer water? Final question, what happens to food demand if over the next 38 years the world’s population increases by an additional 2-3 billion, reaching 9-10 billion on total?
The answer is, we have a problem.
Drying up. What happens to farms if there is no water? - History Future Now

So, to wrap up. 30% of current global food production may disappear in 38 years, leaving enough food production for 4.9 billion people, and the population may increase to 10 billion. Essentially, there will be enough food at current consumption levels for 50% of the world’s population.
Can anybody else see a problem here?

There's only only slight problem. You see, the earth's average global temperature hasn't risen in 17 years now. The last time the earth's average global temperature warmed was in 1997. We are currently in a cooling trend that some scientists believe may last another 40 years. This cooling trend was not predicted by AGW. However, believers in AGW were quick to announce that this cooling trend "proves" AGW after all! Of course, we who are opposed to AGW would remind people that we were in a similar cooling trend from 1940-1975, when man's CO2 output from industrialization was growing. Yet amazingly the earth did not warm. Just as we have been trying to tell you, CO2 is not associated with global warming. The very premise of AGW falls apart and can't withstand this inconvenient fact.

but unsustainable depletion of groundwater has recently been documented on both regional7, 8 and global scales9, 10, 11

Definition: Unsustainable: not able to be maintained or supported in the future, esp. without causing damage or depletion of a resource

You shouldnt need to be a scientist to see the obvious, Our population is forcing us to engage in unsustainable practises. water, fishing, deforestation .

We live in a finite closed system......... the math is simple

If i lock you in a room with a bucket of water and a cup, and that bucket does not get topped up, you will die soon after the water runs out.

Maths not myth

The earth is not a room. The world's water supply is not a bucket and a cup. You fail.
