Is America Doomed?

Free episodes:

anybody, or nobody: take another look back through and spend time figuring out exactly what is being said.

I don't think anyone finds the idea of suicide being illegal, completely logical.
I don't think anyone agrees that a suicidal person who is bent on killing others, should be allowed to go ahead and do their will.
We all agree murder to 'solve' your own problems is not the solution
we all agree police get stuck with the rotten jobs
most of us will agree they don't get paid enough to make up for the psychological harm their job can cause them
many of us would never take on that job.

so, thinking about that, where do you DISagree? not many places, right? or am I completely insane even bothering to point out that differing opinions do not aliens make?

Bunnies... yes, cute.

Do I misremember? the photo of the happy family taken and then the caption they were murdered by a suicidal man with a gun?

You shouldn't have to remember anything AnnetteMarie, you can scroll back and read (as can we all).

What you'll find if you do is that nobody mentioned it until jpw inexplicably inserted it into the conversation and then pretended like it was the point all along, which it catagorically WASN'T.

I'm guessing that it involves some sort of moral projection on his part in which he views suicide as self-murder and therefore identical to murder and that acceptance of the former means acceptance of the latter, which is as absurd a notion to me as the idea that suicide can be made "illegal".

If I remember correctly, jpw is, like me, Catholic, although unlike me, he is a practising Catholic.
From what I remember waaaayyy back when, part of our catechism is, indeed, suicide is murder of oneself, and therefore, not allowable under the Ten Commandments.

At first contemplation, making suicide illegal is basically pointless, as if you succeed, there is no one to prosecute, and if you fail, then you can always try again as they don't keep you locked up forever.

however, thinking that logic over, there actually appears to be a good basis for making it illegal: people who fail at it, get remanded to custody of a psychiatric facility for observation and very often wind up getting the help they need to strengthen their skills for coping with life, or medicinal intervention to help re-balance their brain's chemistry and hopefully, allow them to be 'happy' and not suicidal.

the ideal behind making suicide illegal may well have been those two points. if anyone has a background in law and makes a habit of researching why certain laws came about, the story behind this one might be one I would find worth hearing.

What goes up must come down. It is when you think you are the strongest that you become weak. Have no doubt about it, the US will be the next fallen empire and become a normal country, just like every country in Europe. France, England, Spain, just to name a few all were arrogant, overconfident empires at some point in their history. The US will go through the same fate. It is not a question of if, it is a question of when.

I have had occasion to contact distant family, by distant I mean geographically as well as familiarity, that lives in Corsica. Corsica 'belongs' to France and during my conversation with my cousin's hubby, I mentioned wanting to visit my uncle's grave in Ancerville. He was buried there when his plane crashed in 1944. Anyway, this fellow was very quick to thank me! who was born well after the second ww, and made sure I knew how grateful the people of France are for those who came to fight for their freedoms.

which made me wonder, why did "we" do that? and I think I have an answer: it was done because the people of my country and the US, were fighting for their families back home. most of them were within a generation of immigration to Canada and the US, so the emotional ties were still strong, many had cousins, brothers, sisters or parents living in Europe, so the urge to protect was still strong.

what are our emotional ties to? money? consumerism? instant gratification?

what does my generation have the urge to protect?

A sword may liberate or enslave. Or it may become blunted thru disuse.
Such is the voice of an individual. Such is the might of a nation.
Suicide is considered a legal issue because we must work within that framework to implement intervention/aid. Besides., don't you hate it when people cut in line? They should wait their' turn.
Yes., America is doomed., you are doomed., I am doomed., the world is doomed. All systems inevitably must fall into entropy. We are equal parts stardust and bullshit. So chill., and enjoy the ride.

It could always be better too but nobody ever seems to mention that part.
I think it could easily be better if certain players were made to exit the field.
