America should not have destabilized Iraq to invade a 2nd time. Was Saddam Hussein so evil vs what is unleashed within Iraq since we invaded under false pretext? We were proven wrong. We're proven wrong more than a decade later. Why is this a never ending war?
Iraq under Saddam was NOT a radicalized religious nation. It was more modern and secular, though it took a hard core brutal dictator to rule Iraq. Saddam was an excellent counterpoint and counterbalance to Iran's radical religious jihads, so these two nations stalemated each others powers in opposition to each other.
Leave it to our MIC and "special interests" to screw-up what was a good stalemate to maintain the "status quo" in the Middle East. Don't forget that Syria was a secular nation too before all the recent religious radicalization and civil warfare. Should we be involved in that too? Taking sides? Why?
Revolutions in the Middle East are not likely to have outcomes that are secular promoting religious freedom and individual rights. How stupid can we be? We only play into the hands of any and all radicals, especially the religious, when the Americans are getting involved. We have no business having CIA and military advisers on the ground stirring up trouble in Syria. Iraq already proves we totally screw-up "the occupation", because Iraq does not stand on its own protecting the rights of its citizens. We failed. Why?
We could have used drones to take-out the criminals destroying the historical sites. These could have been guarded under international agreements.
I recall vividly the few interviews that actually got on the air at the time of the first Iraq incursion under Bush (a time of tremendous pressure on the media to come-to-heel - some journalists lost their jobs because they dared openly criticize the action - Phil Donahue comes to mind, he lost his show as a direct result of openly questioning the war - it was a nasty time). The interviews I recall were interviews with those who understood the region - a General here and there - and they pretty much prognosticated everything that happened. Your summary was what they said would happen.
How did the Bush administration handle the dissenters? They got people fired. They purged the CIA of everyone who had any knowledge of any kind, anyone capable of naysaying what the Bushites wanted to do. They wanted free reign and they got it. I was living in Washington D.C. when it was happening. Unbelievable what was done. Operatives with years of intel knowledge were out-on-the-streets - kicked to the curb. For a while we had no one in the service who even spoke the languages of the region - insanity - they'd all been fired. Crazy. People forget what deep-shit this country was in after the stolen election of 2001 (and it was stolen). People forget the fear-mongering that went on after 9/11 and for years afterwards.
