My 'UFO' sighting/My first post!

Yes, but, I feel it is important not to dismiss the argument that 'empathy and symbiosis may not be universal' out of hand.

If it came across as I was dismissing the flipside of the argument out of hand, I must again be channeling some high grade stupidity here. ...Because, that was not my point. The point is one side of the argument is buoyed by the upsurge of popular positivistic thought, and therefore more easily accessible and consumable by those that might not ever venture for the sake of exploration into the fuzzy interior. Of course the possibility exists that all of our conceptualizations, values, ethics and otherwise may simply be a futile, fantastical exercise - but THAT very view may have more weight at this moment due to a tendency to disregard evidence/experience that may be of a nature too subtle, problematic and evasive for our current methods of inquiry to illuminate. Process is what I'm interested in -not necessarily wrangling an all encompassing Truth -however convenient and comfortable that would be. To sum up, the divide between materialism and the "Transcendent" represents a barrier so problematic we'd need a bunker buster to get us through. And that bunker buster/intervention may never emerge, especially if were looking to map out this territory like its a blueprint for a toaster. No polemic will do that on its own.

Props to T.O. for his integrity and lucidity.

Make no mistake; any analysis I have undertaken clearly shows to me symbiosis/empathy & intelligence/logical thinking are one and irrevocably linked. This occurs on every level I have undertaken the analysis; irrespective of space-time location. And, yes; the implication here is off-earth.
There are hysterisis/random-effects which can overwhelm this posit, but only over the short time-term. Over the long-term; I cannot see logical arguments against the posit. Any system/structure which fundamentally opposes the posit, ultimately must fail.
I only wish to caution against denying a proper hearing for the counter-argument.

Thanks spookie for your story. What gets me is that you think it may have reacted to you or influenced you in some way, because I've had something happen (although it may be much more easily explained than your sighting) which also includes a telescope and what seemed like a "reaction" of the object.

20 years ago I had a simple refractor telescope which I would use for stargazing now and then. One summer evening, the sky was totally cloud-free and turning dark blue and I was "strafing" it to see if I could make out the first stars, when I happened upon a tiny pinpoint of light, not visible to the naked eye, travelling rather slowly in a straight line. I followed it a while, trying to figure out if it was a nearby bird, a faraway plane or maybe a satellite. Back then, the UFO question had been "reintroduced" by the X files and sometimes, I would discuss UFOs with a friend. As I had said to him severeal times (because he thought he had seen some strangely manoeuvering light in the sky), I repeated to myself now: "If it doesn't show any strange behaviour, it's got to be a satellite".

The same instant, the tiny spot just stopped flying in one direction and went on in another at exactly the same speed, at least 90 degrees from its first trajectory. There had been no involuntary movement of my hand or of the telescope and I immediately checked if the tiny point of light wasn't just some reflection of a light below (I just stopped following the object and held the telescope still, but the thing went on still at the same speed, and there were no moving lights like from a car on the ground), thereby losing it out of sight.

I looked for it a while and decided that it must have disappeared, when it (or another tiny pinpoint of light) entered my field of view from the direction the first one had disappeared in. This one I followed again for a while, it moved slowly but surely again, no right-angle turns, no signs of strange un-satellite-like behaviour. Until it just seemed to disintegrate. My first thought was that it had disappeared behind some slightly misty atmospheric layers (as said, there were absolutely no clouds to speak of). But since I've heard of similar sightings via the internet, it may have just "zipped off", as it's frequently desribed.

I know, it's easily explainable as there is only one really strange aspect. But I'm quite sure that the right-angle "turn" was not a result of involuntary movement of myself or the telescope nor was the "object" just a reflection on the lense. Tiny as it was, it definitely seemed to be solid.
