I think there are some fascinating nuances to the story that has given America a tremendous opportunity for dialogue. You should consider celebrating the exploration of the divide. Like a classic UFO sighting, there is always division, contrasting opinions, and a blend of realities worthy of examining to more accurately know its history.

Constantly talking about Trayvon Martin, and his death, and how and why he will be framed as a drug user, dealer, burglar, pot smoker etc. is what needs to happen. I find it fascinating that casual FB commentary makes a kid with pop and candy a drug "devotee" and possibly to blame for his own death, even though he only has pop and candy. I wonder if i was found carrying some logs and an axe to my neighbors's house could i be suspected of being an arsonist? Could I be shot?

The attempt to rewrite the narrative, the need to uphold white America's practice to demonize Blackness and justify the familiar jury outcomes are already spilling out of conservative media outlets. What's the story America wants to write about its history in the post-slave era? This is the most important thing to be asking. Is it going to be Tarantino's version, the conservative treehouse's version or what about, just maybe, Toni Morrison's version? You shouldn't be so quick to leave the dialogue.

And did the Star get this story from The Onion ?

From what I saw it was in the local news and spreading across the internet news sites like wild fire. I also saw it on the news last night while I was at work. I don't let the beast of cable television into my home though, so I know no more.

I just heard Zimm was at a KKK rally a couple hours before he killed Tray. I have not confirmed it tho.

I felt manslaughter would be appropriate charge but apparently the jury didnt

I think you're right, and I commend you for opening this thread and arguing your position so well. It was the prosecutor's error to issue the murder charge (a tactical error; I completely understood the feeling of outrage that motivated her to aim for the higher charge). Offering the manslaughter charge as an 'option' late in the trial was an attempt to correct that error. Unfortunately, the jury was not obligated to deliberate and rule on the lesser charge, but I cannot understand how, among themselves, they justified not doing so. (Perhaps they didn't even discuss that option, which, if true, is shameful.) I think that if the manslaughter charge had been argued from the beginning, Zimmerman would have been found guilty and this country would have been better off for it. Racism continues to poison and distort the minds and hearts of too many people in this country. It corrupts us as a people and makes a mockery of our democratically intentioned institutions. I can't understand why this is still not understood.

Sounds like speed for kids. What you get in a messed-up world in which kids need, want, to alter their minds.

It's what they do when they are introduced to substances at an early age, can't find them/buy them readily. They find a way to recreate it. It's a shame but I've heard of children and teens doing much worse then mixing skittles and juice to get f***** up!

I thought this video was pretty interesting, although, I don't know much about Bill Whittle...

This video was posted here already in another thread about Trayvon, I pointed out several of the various inaccuracies and outright lies in the video, suffice to say it isn't very accurate. As an example this guy claims that combining Watermelon Iced Tea, Skittles and OTC cough syrup will produce what is known as "Lean" or "Purple Drank" This is completely incorrect. Anyone with a basic knowledge of chemistry can tell you that isn't even remotely true, you need codeine based cough syrup with Promethazine to make "Lean" and the only way you can get that is with a prescription. Not to mention the fact that whether he was buying ingredients for a future batch of "Lean" or not is irrelevant considering his toxicology report had no traces of any opiates whatsoever in his system, in fact he had nothing but a small amount of marijuana in his system and that was likely from prior use, so it really doesn't matter because he wasn't under the influence during the event. Meanwhile, Zimmerman was under the influence of an amphetamine based drug during the incident, Adderal, by his own admission, and yet no mention of that in the video. Gee, I wonder why? So who was more likely to be over aggressive due to drug use, the kid smoking pot or the guy taking legal speed? Just another spin doctor trying to paint this kid in the worst light possible, boring and completely predictable.

Thank you for the info.

what's messed up is the current character assination of a dead kid that is now popping up all over the web. i don't know why people have to take great pains to show that Trayvon wasn't all that innocent. a rationally thinking person wouldn't need to have this pointed out, and as Muadib pointed out in another thread, it isn't even the point. At the same time Zimmerman isn't the face of evil incarnate.

http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/29/bloggers-cherry-pick-from-social-media-to-cast-trayvon-martin-as-a-menace/

Yesterday i was getting my morning coffee at a local 7-11 and i spotted a young man...black, fwiw... getting a arizona iced tea. (i dont think it was watermelon flavored) and for the record i resisted the temptation to follow him or call the police. i did have to wonder though if maybe he didn't buy the drink because, at 99 cents for 23 ounces you get a lot for your money. just the thing for people with little income.

Just to clarify and in case anyone feels like arguing about the point I made above, I wasn't saying that you can't get a buzz from drinking too much cough syrup, we all know that you can, just that you can't make Codeine from over the counter ingredients, like the guy says you can in the video. If there's no codeine, it's not "Lean" or "Purple Drank," both of which require some type of opiate based cough syrup to concoct, and anything with an opiate in it would've shown up in his toxicology report. There is only one way to make codeine, and that is from methylated morphine, period, end of story.

The active ingredient that can cause impairment in over the counter cough syrup is known as DXM (Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide) and it's a dissociative, which is completely different from an opiate like Codeine, and it's not something that you would be walking around on after ingesting. Ever take a big ass dose of Nyquil when you were sick? It's the same exact thing, whether you add Iced Tea and Skittles or not. Trayvon would've been passed out on a couch somewhere if he was under the influence of too much OTC cough syrup, not up walking around.

Is anyone even wondering WHY this case caused such high waves in the media ..? Just saying...

because of a four letter word. ...race. race is sexy in a media sort of way. We can't let go of this concept and it will probably always be with us until we turn into those futuristic greys that pop in to see how we are doing..or were doing.
