In some ways yes but if ETs are here I'd assume considerable basic similiarity. In order to get here they'd have to value rationality and progress, much as we do.

IMHO, Its a fair rational assumption.

A place protected from radiations (atmosphere) with adequate temperatures (distance from sun) allowing the presence of water and functional level of gravity (size of planet) is the platform that enabled the development of complex organisms with vertebrae on our planet. Eventually attaining self-awareness with time.

There may be other platforms enabling self-aware beings... but the best starting point is looking for similar working platforms that have the potential of producing relatively similar carbon-based creations that have similar concerns :D (and viruses lol)

Who would you like to talk to first ? A silicon based crystal entity that requires a quantum computer to decode or a quasi-humanoid with similar symbolic languages ? ROFL

With luck, Kepler or TPF may enable us to test the Zeta Reticuli/Serpo story. We may see if a terrestrial planet is indeed there and if so, if it's the right size and distance.

Our current era reminds me of a time when people thought the earth was flat  and the ships would fall off the platform if they went far enough.

We've got a whole bunch of ideas of how life might arise with crazy conditions and all kinds of elements off the chemistry table. With a 14 billion year timeframe (which is only 3 times the age of our solar system) is there that much room for base component variety ?... to produce stuff equivalent to something as complex as DNA ?

I'm willing to bet that the DNA expression of complexity is a universal expression for any earth-like platform. The diversity of its constructs are crazy... Look at any Burgess-Shale organism (pre-cambrian) which got wiped out!!!

Agreed.

Nice pic of Anomalocaris. :)

Other parrallel universes may offer different platforms whose expression of complexity produces sentient entities that have nothing to do with any carbon-based life forms from our universe.

... but that is pure speculation ... until we can test it ;)

IF we can ever do so, in view of the planck barrier. Kaku suggested we could breach it but, I dunno...
