Musical Interests

Was going to post some Tindersticks for them that don't know 'em ... but I just finished listening to the latest car crash of an episode, and L A Marzulli just depressed and exhausted me in equal doses I think.

So instead of the faintly depressing Tindersticks, I give you another great UK band. From London, I give you ... ladies, and 'hentlmen, Squeeze!!!

First the utterly awesome, "Take Me I'm Yours":

Which I seem to have on repeat rather alot at the moment.

And secondly, the great, totally hilarious and fab, "Cool for Cats"

ps ... is that Jools Holland I see smoking a big fat one??? I should co-co :D ... best line: "its funny 'ow their missus always looks the bleedin same" :D ... or is it?? :" ... but all I get is bitter and a nasty little rash" :D ... you decide.

Enjoy ...

Hey, slightly older person, Paraschtick, I am not the biggest fan of the Squeeze.....they did some ok tunes though....Don't like Jools Holland...especially his iritating Hoot-a-Tooty or Hoot-a-Splatty he does every New Year over here.....But I did see him one year in a back street in Edinburgh unloading the boot (trunk) of his Jag.....Needless to say I didn't ask him for his autograph....

If you want to hear a strange but really cool track, listen to "Backwards Singing Monk" by Jocelyn Pook.....Great stuff!!
:D:D:D

This is the shortest song, according to Guinness, that ever entered both the UK and Australien top 10...and it kicks ass.

OMG I am having a college moment. An old boyfriend in college used to sing this song to me and he couldn't sing at all, and knew it, so it was funny.

Many of you will hate me for this, but these guys and gals were a big influence on my friends and I at the time (late 70's).
They weren't so much interested in music obviously. They were more like some sort of political entity, and at the time in this country at least they captured the mood for us very angry young men and women. Added to which it's starting to feel like the old days right now.

Hey Steve and Penny wanna form a band?

Peace,

Mark

Now THIS is a juicy thread. Oh yeah, baby, music is my true obsession.

So as far as music goes, I think that Ritzmann is a metalhead freak. Damned distorted guitars, whatsa matter with ya, Ritzmann, acoustic strings not good enough for ya?

I remember listening to Iron Maiden back in the early eighties, though I preferred Judas Priest, in terms of songs and the guitar tone. And Deep Purple, man, that Live in Japan album just tore my mind up. Electric guitar has always had a strong pull on my musical tastes.

It all started with The Beatles, and the Yellow Submarine movie. I also grew up in a household where there was lots of classical music - Mozart, Bach & Beethoven - as well as soundtracks. I adore the soundtrack to the movie "The Ten Commandments", as well as "Exodus". Bernard Hermann is a hero - think Hitchcock, or Citizen Kane.

OK, here's a totally incomplete list of bands/musicians I listen to often, besides my absolute favorites, Radiohead:

The Posies, Sigur Ros, Chris Whitley (an old friend, may he Rest in Peace), Jimi Hendrix, Porcupine Tree, Butthole Surfers, Pixies, Meat Puppets, Emerson Lake & Palmer, The Black Keys, Zep, Sabbath, first two solo Ozzy albums, Alan Parsons, R. L. Burnside, Alan Holdsworth, Zappa, Neil Young, Yes, John Zorn, Larry Fast/Synergy, Tomita, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Billie Holiday, old Elton John, and a bunch of other stuff that evades me at the moment.

As far as musical instruments, I'm a synthesist and guitar wanker. I grew up with funky electric organs, the ones with the one-key magic chord. I started programming analog synths (Arp 2600) at the age of 13, and have been noodling on electric guitar since the same age. I become the second Electro-Harmonix dealer in Venezuela at 15, and I currently have a somewhat extensive collection of pedals and other weird audio toyz. I LOVE Ableton Live, am enthralled with MetaSynth, adore Absynth, could not live without PSP Vintage Warmer and the Wave Arts MasterVerb and TrackPlug plugins. My main guitars are a PRS CE24, a Variax 300 (which I scored for $300, most versatile guitar in the universe), and a Taylor 414CE acoustic. I also own an amazing, one-of-a-kind electric guitar from a Canadian madman luthier, here it is. Amazing instrument.

Hi David
I know you have lived in South America in your past and have a deep musical interest. So i thought you may enjoy this video my friend showed me recently.
I beleive it is from Barcelona Spain. Even though i have no idea what he is singing i thought it was a beautiful song.
Cheers John

Hey John,

You would have to go and post that, wouldn't you. Now you've got me all fired up again. Here's one I absolutely love and now I have to start a whole new thread.
That should be fun for all.

Just remember, "My mule dont dont like people laughing". :p

I suppose I might be the odd man out in this group.

I'm an acoustic instrumentalist, playing mostly the mandolin these days and have spent some serious time playing and studying the music of my native Appalachia. I'm currently playing a Poe F-5 custom mandolin, red spruce over red maple, which is patterned after the Holy Grail of mandolins, the Gibson Lloyd Loar F-5.

Glad to be amongst some like-minded enthusiasts.

I think I'm in love. It starts getting seriously awesome at about 1:00 in.

Skunkape,

Wow. Just, um... WOW.

The one that starts on the extreme right and ends up in the middle? OMG. Can you imagine a date with her? :p

Thanks for that post, just outstanding.
