I am not saying there aren't fanatics out there, but the idea that insulting a religion is going to have the same effect as killing hundreds of thousands of people or more doesn't make sense. I am not denying their fanaticism or disputing the quotes you provided, just in the scheme of things, killing people is a much bigger causal factor than insulting a religion. It doesn't mean it's the only factor, but it has the biggest effect so it's the biggest factor by far.
I was also referring to hatred of the west, particularly the US, not tribal hatred which goes back a very long time. And with existing animosity, killing only inflames the problem and makes it far worst. I am not a fan of irrationality, but murder isn't a good way of resolving it.
Also, keep in mind that the US intelligence community stokes those irrational fires when it suits them and then other parts of the US government are enemies. Remember from Braveheart, (paraphrasing): "You will support the rebellion from the south, while I oppose it from the north".
